Late Bloomer
When I was in elementary school, I was not as academically gifted as the other students. At the same time I was an average athlete. I really couldn't find my niche. But because of the hard work of several teachers my performance improved. My dad and mom also encouraged me to stick with soccer. By 9th grade I had overcome most of my academic struggles and was hoping to be a great soccer player. By end of my freshman soccer season, it was clear that I was not seen as one of the most valuable players. Luckily my coach noticed I was a great runner. I joined the winter track team as a distance runner. This changed my life.
I am mostly in Honors classes now at one of the most competitive schools in Massachusetts. My favorite classes are English and History. I enjoy school and hope to be a teacher to help kids that struggle. I was voted captain of Cross Country by my teammates. I also was honored as “unsung hero” of our top ten program. By the end of the night it was revealed I was a league all star as well. Next year we have 4 returning all stars, and I am determined to lead us to the state title. I am new to the sport, young for my grade, and believe I have a huge upside in both running and the classroom. I hope to continue to run in college. I believe it's essential to my academic and social success.
Sincerely, Collin Rice
