My name is Kai Somasegaran. I attend Rockhurst High School (a College Preparatory school) in Kansas City, Missouri and have been running track and cross country since the fourth grade. I am seeking a college that will push me both athletically and academically. Subjects that are core to me are the sciences and mathematics. As an athlete, I would like to be part of a competitive program which has a holistic approach to physical and academic performance.
Attributes setting me apart from others are coachability, humility, work ethic, and leadership. While many athletes may have a similar statement, I can assure you that this is my truth and my coaches, teachers, and peers can attest to this. I firmly believe this is why I was chosen by my teammates and coaches to lead the cross country team as team captain for the 2023 season. Within my first high school season, I progressed from freshman team to varsity and state alternate while achieving a 3.8 GPA and participating in medical and outdoors clubs. I ended my first high school cross country season as the 28th fastest freshman in Missouri and continued training in the off season to pursue a competitive edge over others. In addition, I lifted weights three days a week and continued to run every day in order to prepare myself for the next season. This last summer, I also attended a six day men‘s running retreat in the Cascade Mountains in Washington, tallying about seventy miles over the time period.
This year, as a sophomore with a full academic schedule, including advanced classes, I earned the position as the 6th man on the varsity team and finished the season as the 14th fastest sophomore in the state as well as racing post season in the Nike Cross Regionals, in Terre Haute, IN. I also made significant improvements in the 1600 and 3200 in track abc field this season, finishing as the 3rd fastest sophomore in the state of Missouri in the 3200 with a best time of 9:32. I would not be the runner I currently am without the effort and dedication of my coaches and fellow teammates. Nevertheless, in season, I am hardworking and a strong group leader. I set an example for the team and go out of my way to support my fellow athletes. One of my greatest experiences as a sophomore varsity runner was the ability I had to introduce freshmen to the sport and push my teammates to their full potential. What I love about cross country is the impact each team member has on the team chemistry and how we all push one another to be the best versions of ourselves. Running at this level is a privilege. My passion and effort isn’t limited to sports. I push myself in school, take my grades seriously, and love learning.
