In March of 2012, I made the decision to try out for my high school track and field team instead of playing baseball which I had been doing every Spring for years. I knew I could throw pretty well and decided to try out specifically for the throwing events. As it turns out, I found throwing the javelin to come very naturally to me and the one event I enjoyed the most while at the same time excelling at.
That Summer, I began working with a personal coach to continue to improve my technique as well as work on the mental aspects of competing in the javelin. I continue working with him regularly every couple of weeks during the off-season and in-season use him to supplement my high school coaches especially prior to major meets.
In the Spring 2013 varsity season, along with two other teammates, we set a new 3-man javelin relay mark for the school. The highlight of the season was qualifying and participating in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals Emerging Elite javelin competition. I also joined a club track team and competed in USATF Junior Olympic meets qualifying for the Junior Olympics Nationals at the end of July.
This Junior year has been the most challenging for me yet both academically and athletically. It has required me to closely manage my time as well as maintain focus on different tasks at the same time. While preparing for the SAT and ACT tests, I am a student ambassador for the school, have a part-time job at my church, organized my college search, averaged a 3.9 GPA over the first three marking periods while being a member of of our indoor and outdoor varsity track teams.
Knowing that through hard work, I can successfully balance the academics and athletics, I really would like to continue to throw the javelin in college. I believe being part of a close-knit team and under the tutelage of the right coaches can excel even further. Currently I am interested in majoring in Physical Therapy or a similar major where I can combine helping people possibly in a sports setting. I would definitely be interested in a college and a track and field program that could help me to grow both as a scholar and an athlete.
