Hello Coaches,
I’m Alain Malcolm, a current Junior at Archbishop Mitty High School and middle blocker for Bay to Bay Volleyball Club. So far I've been playing for about a year and a half, as I started in August 2021. My motivation for playing volleyball is largely love for the sport. I love the feeling of getting blocks, hitting past a block, passing a perfect ball, or giving a set so good the hitter can’t help but bounce it. I feel happier when I’m playing volleyball, and the feeling of a volleyball against my arms and hands is enough to bring me purely into the world of volleyball. Furthermore, it is the perfect avenue to watch my hard work pay off and to see myself tangibly improve.
One of my most valued core beliefs is that the only legitimate route to success is hard work and consistency. In volleyball, this means getting in the gym on a consistent basis, practicing serve receive and self tossed hitting in my yard whenever possible, and making it to as many open gyms as I can. It is also this work ethic that brings a lot of joy out of volleyball for me, as watching myself get better and better over time makes all the effort more than worth it. My mentality of hard work also carries over into my academics, in which I strive to be the best student I can be. Although I only started playing volleyball in my Sophomore year, I choose to see this as an opportunity to prove myself and show how quickly I can get better rather than too look at it as lost time or a detrimental setback.
On the court, I try to be coachable and energetic. I believe that every player has a responsibility to their team to bring as much energy as possible whenever possible, so I always do my best to keep my team fired up through encouragement, cheering, and making big plays when I can. Additionally, I try to make sure everyone maintains a positive, “next-play” mindset by leading with my own attitude and energy. I also believe every player owes it to not just their coaches but also themselves to respect their coaches and diligently implement any feedback in order to improve their game.
Overall, my love for volleyball, love for improvement, and love for hard work drive me to continue playing volleyball in college and fuel me to pursue this sport to the highest level I can.
