Hi! My name is Mason Bergstein and I am a 6’3” Junior at Parkland High School, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Parkland High School is a school widely known for its large size (approximately 3,200 students) and competitive sports programs that regularly compete in post-season play. I am a setter on the volleyball team and play guard on the basketball team. I learned the sport of volleyball in 7th grade, when I was asked to try out for the team by the coach seeking tall, coachable, male athletes. At the time I was a tri-sport athlete. The coach was a collegiate level player, and currently is a club volleyball owner. She taught me to be a setter, including strategic play and dynamics of the court. I immediately developed my love for setting. Following my first season, I began participating in summer camps and tournaments to submerge myself in the sport. That fall, I became a manager for the girls’ volleyball team at Springhouse Middle School and began playing at the club level. l continued to play year-round. After my second year of middle school volleyball, I added fall play by managing the girls’ volleyball team at my high school. The coach for the team is very widely known for 20+ years of highly competitive girls’ volleyball, passing many of his players on to the collegiate level. His teams have competed for state championships for many years. Last year, I was part of the high school boys’ volleyball team. Through these endeavors, I have been playing volleyball at some capacity year-round for five years. This has enabled me to add to my skill set by expanding my hitting, defensive, and serving abilities, making me a more well-rounded player overall. I have attended camps at universities including Alvernia College(PA), Lehigh University(PA), and Penn State(PA). I have also attended camp specific for setters, and a college coach contacted my high school coach days after the camp concluded. I intend to play competitive volleyball throughout my college career and I am hoping to find a university that fits both my athletic and academic interests. This year, I intend to set for the Varsity Parkland Boys Volleyball team for my third season. As a setter, I know the significance of my strengths and abilities, positive character, and capability to lead the team. This position acts as an integral part of the team as a whole. Many of my coaches would speak highly of my ability to both motivate and lead my team in all situations. I invite you to contact them as a reference, and inquire about my character both on and off the court.
Words coaches have used to describe me as an athlete:
*"coachable"
*"overall good kid"
*"gamer that rises to the occasion"
*"agressive athlete"
*"competitive"
*"great teammate"
*"effort and attitude outstanding"
*"Did a lot of the dirty work on defense"
*"good spatial concepts"
*"athletic and active"
