Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Scott Villiard.  I am 17 years old and I love water polo. Before starting water polo, though, my passion was baseball.  I played it for nine years including seven years of travel baseball.  I still play in a recreational league today and it is this passion that led me to water polo.  It all started in my freshman year when I tried out for the baseball team.  I was cut.  However, that was not the end of the story.  The baseball coaches, along with the swim coaches and the athletic director saw something in me.   They noticed my throwing skills, my swimming skills, and knew I was a good team player so they suggested that I try out for water polo. I thought about it and I decided to give it a try. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made.  I learned that water polo is an exciting, enjoyable, intense sport and I love playing it.

This past season as a sophomore on varsity, I was a starter and I got lots of playing time. At the end of the season I was selected as an honorable mention for the all sectional team. Although I have only been playing for two years, I am assertive in the water, and I am always looking to better myself as a player and also as a teammate.  Helping others in and out of the water is important to me, whether it be new players, or experienced players because I am always looking to improve the team as a whole.  In addition, I have been training hard this past year, taking any opportunities to get one on one time with my coach, or just any extra water time, and learning all I can about water polo.  Being only 5'8" and weighing 136 lbs., most people I go up against make me look like an ant, but like an ant I can conquer things that are double my size and weight.   This effort that I put into water polo both in and out of the pool is the same as the effort I put into my education.  In fact, I am looking forward to playing water polo at the collegiate level, where I plan to keep developing myself not only as a teammate, but as a leader and a competitor so that I may achieve the level of greatness in my sport while still achieving a great academic career which is very important to me. Whether it be DI, DII, DIII, or playing Club water polo, I know I am ready to commit, and I am confident that I will have a positive impact on the team I become a part of. Water polo has had so many positive effects on my life and is making me a better person.
