Personal Statement

My name is Angelica Maples but everyone calls me GELI. I love music, my friends, the outdoors and time to myself to read.  I love to write fiction stories, draw, outdoor activities and especially play sports. My parents are divorced, between my two families I am the oldest of 6 kids and the first in my family to go to college.  My mother and father both went in the U.S. Navy after high school, and my Step-Father went into the U.S. Air Force after high school. I am truly blessed to be a role model for my younger siblings.  College is important to me, I am dedicated in my studies and they are a priority to me. Finding the right college that fits my career goal needs along with a sports program is key.

I learn best by explaining, details and specifics are key. I am always thinking, sometimes too much. So having a coach who keeps me informed on their intentions with me as a player is key. I always have my head in the game and am analyzing all aspects, so knowing what is expected for me from my coach helps me perform better. Open communication is key. I am a very dedicated and hard working player in all aspects of sports. I push myself 110% and always strive to give 110%.  Being part of a team is what I love, I love being their support and raising them up! When I know my team and coaches are behind me 100%, that is when I succeed the most!

I love everything about playing softball. There was a point in time where I didn't play softball for a Spring and Summer season, my parents felt I needed a break from it, and it ended up driving me crazy.  Softball is my passion and I believe now that I can't live without it. I love the sensation of feeling the reward of doing something for a team, of the pounding in my head when I sprint around the bases, the feel of the bat against the ball with a perfect hit, and every detail of playing the game. When I write these things I do not exaggerate.  I would like to go to the Olympics and play softball, hoping that someday it will return. So, every chance I get I am watching woman's fastpitch softball games on T.V..

I strive to gain perfection, but perfection just keeps adding on these little things that make a big difference when I try to reach them. Nobody is perfect, but that doesn't mean that I can't try for it. I always get better and unless I give up I will keep advancing without even knowing it. I want to know when I advance to the next level, that I can be happy for what I accomplished and to always keep improving. -----

I had the great opportunity to play for USA Athletes International Softball Team in the 2014 Blacktown Softball Challenge in Sydney, Australia from June 14 - June 26, 2014.  Coach Dale Lehnhoff, Head Coach of the USAAI 18U team and Assistant Coach of Embry-Riddle University - Arizona watched me at the Triple Crown Reno/SparksTober Showcase in Nevada and provided me with the opportunity to play for him.  It was a great opportunity to represent my town and country. The experience was something I will always remember!

My current position of play is Outfield/Utility & 3rd Base since Summer of 2014.  Most of my experience in softball is as Shortstop, but over the past four years I have become knowledgeable and have excelled as a Catcher, Outfield, 2nd and 3rd bases as well.  So I am very excited to be listed as a Utility player since 2014, where I can display my versatility and help the team wherever needed.  I pride myself in being a strong hitter, I have lead my competitive team in home runs for two seasons (2012-2014), and in 2014 I was 2nd in the my high school season in home runs.

  • USA | Athletes International Bringing the World’s Best Athletes Together through Sports and Education Angelica Maples selected to the USA Athletes International Softball team competing in Australia, June 14-26, 2014 For Immediate Release Angelica Maples, the daughter of Nathan and Felicia Mayo of Dobbins, CA, a softball player at Marysville High School in Marysville, CA and of the Sutter Buttes Thunder – Barnes 16U Competitive Team, has been selected to compete on a USA Athletes International (USAAI) Softball team traveling to Australia to compete in the Blacktown Softball Challenge at the Olympic Softball Complex outside of Sydney from June 14 through 26, 2014. The USAAI team, composed of select athletes from across the country, will travel to Australia to compete in a series of games against competition from across Australia. Players from all over the country are recommended for the team based on two key elements: (1) their athletic ability and (2) their ability to represent their country, school and hometown in a positive manner. “Angelica is an excellent example of the type of athletic ambassador and player USA Athletes International seeks to bring into international competition. She will bring the term ambassador to life on this trip, showing the USAAI athletes and her Australian opponents her love for the sport she has had the opportunity to excel in here in the States,” stated Darrell Phipps, Program Coordinator at USA Athletes International. “Angelica is taking the opportunity to represent Marysville High School, her community, and the USA as an ambassador for the sport of softball and the United States. Ms. Maples is definitely making the best of this opportunity and we are all proud to have her as a part of our program.” In addition to competing, the team will also take plenty of time to tour Australia, learning all about the history and culture of the land “Down Under”. USA Athletes International is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that seeks to provide educational opportunities that are facilitated through athletic competition. With the exception of the U.S. Olympic program, there are few opportunities for athletes to experience the competition, history, and culture of other countries on an international level. USA Athletes International, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to giving amateur athletes and coaches the opportunity to participate in International Olympic style sporting events throughout the world, while also allowing them to broaden their educational and cultural knowledge of the world through the experience. 820 S. • Camp/Event
  • PGF & DF Softball - Reno, Nevada
  • 6/15/13 to 6/16/13
  • We were in the U16/18 B bracket division even though most of our team members are U14 players. On the 15th we played three games and won all of them. We scored a total of 22 runs and only let 4 runs be scored. That seeded us 2nd place. So on the 16th our first game was at 10:30 in the morning. We won that game 11 to 1, but there was a funny occurrence that happened that game. I come up to bat with 1 out and a runner on first. The first pitch was a ball, second pitch I fouled it off, then the ump stepped back for some reason and I did to, I was focusing on what the next pitch would be and saw that the pitcher was on the mound and ready to pitch. I get in the box and get ready to swing, here comes the pitch and I swing and make good contact. The ball goes way over the center field fence, Home Run, and the crowd is cheering and I'm rounding first when the ump behind the plate is calling dead ball. Apparently the ump wasn't behind the plate when the pitch came, so it didn't count. I turn around and go back to the batters box laughing, it was the funniest thing to me. I get back in the batters box and the pitcher tries to give me a change up and fails, the pitch after that was also a ball. she gives me an outside pitch and I hit a line drive over the second baseman's head for a single. After that experience, I'm going to make sure the ump is ready at all times. The next time I came up to bat, I waited till the ump said okay and then I turned to him and asked him if he was ready with a smile on my face. He laughed and said yes and I got in the batters box, first pitch I hit a ground ball past the third baseman and reached first. Everyone was laughing at the fact that my homerun didn't count because the way it happened, it was funny.
