Personal Statement

My name is Mylan Lowe; I am in the class of 2021 at Drew Charter School in Atlanta, Georgia. My collegiate goals are to major in nursing or physical therapy and minor in business. Although I haven't played softball as long as most players, over the years I have picked up many skills  that make me just as great and I would like to display them at a collegiate level.  Softball has given me so many opportunities to better myself as an athlete, a student, and a family member because I have learned two of the most important skills; teamwork and leadership. Post college, I aspire to go to medical school and become an OB/GYN.  Although my passion for softball grows more everyday, helping women know more about their bodies and having safe deliveries has always been my dream. Having a solid career after college is extremely important to me because the support my family gives me right now is incredible and I want to work hard to return the favor.

Since my freshman year on varsity, my school has looked at softball as the underdog of the sports program because we suffered hard losses and didn't bring as much dignity to the school's name as the other sports did.  With the characteristics I have taken in from the past years of  playing both varsity and travel, I put together workout plans, dietary plans, and even softball study groups so that everyone can be on the same page of expanding their knowledge for the sport, hoping our reputation will change. I am just as influential on the field as I am off the field. My selflessness and flexibility puts me in a position to bring a lot to my team because I can play any position without any hesitation which is why I won MVP for three years in a row on varsity. I have over 950 community service hours from giving back to my community by managing my school's varsity basketball team, volunteering at a foster home, and even leading some focus groups. Maintaining a good GPA is important to me so when I don't have practice after school, I help other students and student-athletes with any subject they need help with to help them get academically stable.

Challenge is my main outlook on my college journey. Challenging myself with all AP classes while maintaining a 3.8 GPA, along with getting in two workouts a day then going to Beta club or NHS is what motivates me to become a better athlete and person. I don't just want to play softball for the title or recognition, but I want to play because it makes my family proud and creates bonds I can have forever while developing character and skills. I believe in pushing myself to where there is no limit which is why the game of softball is very important to me with its multiple components that require outstanding skill. My everyday inspiration is my lock screen with a quote by Jerry Rice that says "Today I will do what others won't so that tomorrow I can do what others can't".
