Personal Statement
My name is Laura Savage and I am a senior at Marion High School, a public school located in small-town Marion, KS. For all of my life, I have lived on a farm outside of town. Although living on a farm is not directly related to athletics or academics, it has taught me valuable life lessons that have helped me in my academic and athletic pursuits. Specifically, raising bottle calves taught me to focus on the good and not the bad. When you are cleaning calf pens, you are undoubtedly going to be covered in manure, but if you are able to escape without being kicked it is a good day. Bottle calves also taught me about hard work. Being the 'mother' of an animal requires time, patience, and strength. However, sometimes there is only so much you can do to help a sick calf. After you have done all you can, there is only one thing left to do: pray.
In my mind, the game of softball is similar to raising bucket calves. Unlike other sports, if you are successful 50% of the time at the plate, you are doing extremely well. Some games you don't do as well as others. Still, you have to keep going and focus on the good plays or things you did. Whether that was a routine fly ball or cheering for teammates, you can always have an impact. Everyone has bad days, it is how you bounce back from them that matters.
I plan to continue working hard when I get to the next level. I want to maintain good grades while in college and to play my favorite sport, softball. My short term academic goals are to settle on my desired major, finish high school, and pursue whatever degree I need whether that be a Bachelors's, Master's, or Doctorate. My athletic goals are to finish high school with a state championship win with my softball team, to play softball on a team where we are successful and continually getting better.
