Personal Statement
I began playing softball in fourth grade after watching my best friend play and enjoy the game. I quickly advanced in softball which came as a surprise to those around me since it was my first experience with the sport. Early on, I developed the idea that I wanted to be a catcher, despite the fact my team already had one. A good one. However, I was motivated, I found an inner drive that pushed me to earn the spot. Though I did reach my goal of earning the starting position I had been dreaming about, I believe that the journey was more rewarding. I learned that no one else is responsible for me, except for myself, and it all depends on how much I want it because no one is going to do it for me.
It has always been just my mom and I, and it’s never been easy. She works two jobs and at the same time has never stopped working to help me achieve my dream of playing softball, eventually at a college level. Growing up in a single-parent household, my mother has taught me that hard work does pay off. This attribute, I feel, has always set me apart from other student-athletes. It is my desire to play and succeed at the sport as well as my work ethic that I feel will make me a valued teammate at the college level. My mother has shown me that academics have an immense impact on one’s life, and that one should never take education for granted. This has allowed me to push myself in and out of school to achieve good grades and honors credits. I am seeking a college that is a good fit for me as a student and as an athlete.
