Personal Statement
Hey Coaches,
My name is Jada Dickens. I'm a senior at FDR High School in Hyde Park, NY. Enclosed are some facts about me and my life. Among some of my hobbies are; writing poetry, playing softball and basketball, listening to music, hanging out with friends and family, and taking peaceful jogs. Most people would describe me as very outgoing, talkative, free-spitied, open-minded, and even outrageous at times. I pride myself in being a good friend, a good student, and a good person. I seldom find myself in any altercations with friends, teammates, or any one really. My favorite subject is history and I'd like to major in it. History has always been my strong suit, even when I was too stubborn to notice it. After 8th grade, I changed districts and my mom thought it best for me not to play any sports my first year in a new school. So, I took a break. Taking that break from softball was probably my biggest mistake during my high school career. Sophomore year, softball was the only thing on my mind. But, I knew I wouldn't be ready for it come spring. So I played junior varsity basketball. Basketball was great and it put me in shape for softball. During tryouts, my speed, courage to take physical risks, and my strive to win are the things that got me noticed. That season I played center field mostly, but I also played right field and that season was probably my best season yet (besides little league). Junior year, I didn't play basketball, because of issues with my coach. He wanted me to play summer league basketball, but I had already made a commitment to a summer camp for 3 weeks. The Summer Institute for the Gifted and Talented, I had been there before, but my seccion was cut short do to a fast-spreading virus. The camp was a huge opportunity for me, I'd get to take classes that I chose, on a college campus with people from all over the world. My coach couldn't except the fact that I wasn't putting basketball first and said that if I didn't play summer league I wouldn't be eligible to make the varsity basketball team in the fall. So, I chose my education. My coach hasn't talked to me all school year. His actions pushed me to focus more on school and softball. Next school year, I made the varsity softball team before even trying out.Sadly, before our first game, I dislocated my shoulder which caused me to sit out most of the season. As soon as my doctor told me I could take the sking off, I asked if I could atleast run. Understanding that sliding might cause more injury, I was willing to take that risk. First day after being cleared, I became courtesy runner for our pitcher. I was proud to score the runs for my team and I was almost never out. My coach even played me for a few games. Giving me the assistance in beginning to trust my shoulder again. Now that my shoulder is fully healed, I have faith that next season I will be able to actually show that I'm not only a fast runner and that I belong playing varsity softball. I am a very athletic person and if not for my mom, I would probably play more sports, but she thinks sports won't get you anywhere. She doesn't see how much sports help people bacome who they really are and grow as a person. She doesn't see how important they are to me. But, I can't figure out how to change that. My mom's only goal for me is to go to college and get a good job (Maybe a nurse). My goals are to go to a good college, preferably one on the east coast, major in history, play softball, and then become a history teacher. That is what I want. I'm hoping that I can do it.
Thank you for your time,
Jada Dickens
