Personal Statement
The main reason I love to play and want to continue to play basketball is because it serves as a catalyst for balance. Basketball is a platform for me to have fun, escape stress, be a part of a family, and it gives me the opportunity to act in a leadership role and continuously learn how to work through challenges and compromise. One thing I have learned about myself, that transfers in every other area of my life is, when it gets hard I don’t quit, I push myself until the goal is accomplished.
I started playing basketball when I was in the 5th grade. Prior to this, I was a competitive gymnast. I thought transitioning from gymnastics, a sport I participated in since I was 4, would be difficult, and it was. I remember my first basketball practice. I had zero dribbling and shooting skills. I remember being able to play strong defense and out run others though. I instantly knew, I liked the contact and aggression involved and that this was a sport I wanted to continue with. So I worked hard to catch up with the other girls. I practiced dribbling in my garage and shooting on the hoop at home. At practice I made sure I was in every play available and tried to stay on the floor as much as possible and gain all the skills possible.
I have been playing basketball for 8 years now, and I can not imagine managing my life without it. Without this outlet, I imagine myself sitting at home, with lots of idle time, and a lot less friendships. I would probably feel overwhelmed. The reason I think this is because whenever I am having a challenging time academically or socially, playing ‘ball helps me to feel better. I need basketball.
I know that I am strong in many ways and have a lot of talent. There are also areas that I want and need to improve on. My left hand is my dominant hand, but, I am becoming more comfortable using my right hand as an alternative, when the defender cuts off my left. I am also a smaller guard, but it doesn't stop me from driving to the basket strong and creating the contact. However, I have learned and continue to improve on my pull up for a mid range shot instead of going all the way to the basket. I really enjoy playing basketball because I am very competitive and hungry for the win.
I believe I am a great candidate to play in college, not only because I love the game of basketball, but I also bring many accomplishment with me. I am a 3 year starter; Norcal runner up for state 2 years in a row, and 1 year a semi-finalist; NCS MVP 2 years; First team all league 2 years; Team Captain 3 years; Runner up for Junior Player of the Year for the Bay Area Basketball League 2018; MVP at school for all winter sports; and a 4 years honor roll student.
