Personal Statement
I can't imagine not playing my beloved sport competitively in another year. Basketball isn't just my identity, it is truly a part of who I am. When I'm not at practice, skills training or working on my physical fitness, I'm working at the local, public basketball gym running the board and books during the youth recreational games, or I'm volunteering as a coach for younger players, and for the Shooting Stars League made up of players with a variety of physical disabilities or learning and emotional challenges. During off time, I organize some of my teammates and we play pick-up basketball games at several of our local parks and facilities in order to challenge myself and learn new strategies.
I am a very dedicated player and humbled to have had the opportunity to play for my high school women's varsity basketball program since my freshman year. It is a very tough, competitive program and we have been at the top of our CIF-San Diego Section for several years under the direction of Coach Kroesch and Coach Freeman. I may not be the best player on our highly elite team, but I am most certainly the best player for the team. My coaches always make a point to highlight what a great team player I am to the team, my parents, and our community. I have always been known as a quick, kinesthetic learner and able to support my teammates to learn new plays during practices. I am very coachable, and can turn constructive criticism into plays and learn from failure. I rise to a challenge and have no fear on the court. I truly believe in the importance of encouraging each individual player's success and I'm the loudest supporter on the bench, completely focused on the performance of my teammates and committed to the success of my team.
I'm also a very committed student, pushing myself to excel in my high school classes and taking community college courses concurrently in Spanish, Child Development, and Algebra II to prepare for my higher education. I love to study mathematics, analyze data and have an investigative spirit. I would like to start my post-secondary education exploring the different professions that a mathematics bachelor's degree will prepare me for. I am also interested in helping and supporting people and hope that I can maybe learn more about a profession in human resources, accounting, or finance departments of a large organization or business.
It has been a great experience to be a serious high school athlete these past three years. I may have the pressure from my coaches and teammates to push my limits and to be the best version of myself athletically and physically, but I also have the safety and support of a cohesive unit that genuinely cares about me and my success. I am held accountable in the most positive way which has helped me gain confidence in whatever challenges I have faced in life and my ability on the court.
