Playing in the West Virginia Class AA State Basketball Tournament my freshman year, was an important crossroad in my basketball career. As a result of losing the championship game, I learned the importance of fundamentals, communication, teamwork, and leadership. The title slipped through our hands because we neglected the important details of the game. The lessons I’ve learned and the leadership skills I’ve developed through this experience have allowed me to become a better player.
My sophomore season was a time of extreme personal growth. First, I was humbled to be selected as a team captain. Second, my coach asked me to play multiple positions including shooting guard, small forward, and when necessary point guard. These opportunities made me a well-rounded player and have increased my basketball IQ. The title again slipped through our hands, further fueling the fire within me.
Finally, during my junior year, we won the West Virginia Class AA State Basketball Championship. All of the hard work paid off and one of my personal goals was completed.
I believe that academics are a major part of being a successful athlete; therefore, they are extremely important to me. My goal is to explore a major in science that will place me on a pathway to be proficient in physical therapy school. On the court, I plan to be a dynamic player and positively influence my team. As I grow mentally and physically, I will strive to be an asset to the team through a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, high-energy, and strong leadership skills. Most importantly, I will conduct myself with honor and respect on and off the court, knowing that how I convey myself is a reflection of my family, my team, my coaches and the university I attend. I believe that I have what it takes to make a huge impact on your team!
