Personal Statement
My name is Amanda Olson and I am going to be a junior at Edgewood High School, a college-prep school in Madison, WI. Although academics are stressed and challenging at Edgewood, there is a strong focus on being a balanced individual, bringing together body, mind and spirit. I strive to be a balanced person and do my best in all aspects of my life. I am a competitive person and developed a passion for sports, particularly basketball at a young age. In addition to my family, friends, academics and sports I am also involved in Young Life, a youth Christian organization.
Basketball and volleyball have been a significant part of my life, starting with youth basketball in 3rd grade. I fell in love with basketball and worked hard to learn the game, to develop my basketball skills and basketball IQ, to be a leader and be a part of a team. My passion for basketball motivates me to improve my skills every day and to outwork my opponents. My dream for my college experience is to bring together my academic goals to be a dentist and my passion for basketball.
In 2017-18 season I was the only sophomore on varsity and freshman year was the only freshman on JV. I am so thankful that my hard worked paid off and I was able to compete at these levels. In addition, I am very athletic and my quickness and agility are key assets on the court. I started strength and agility training this year with a former D1 women’s basketball player to prepare me for my remaining high school years and for my college career. I also do regular skills workouts with my dad and my brother. I believe I bring the skills and character to be a great member of a college team.
Connecting with my teammates, being a leader and giving back to others is also something that I pride myself in doing and I work at being a friend and a leader on the court and in life. I am going to be a middle school leader at Young Life this year and plan to volunteer as a crew member at a camp in summer of 2019 in addition to the school and community service I already do.
