Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Sydney Silva and I am a Sophomore at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, California.  From a young age, I have played multiple sports including soccer, club volleyball, ice hockey, tennis, swimming, and more!  I first picked up a golf club at 4 years old on a mini-golf course!  I loved playing so much that I wanted to try “real golf”.  At 5 I was on my way to growing my love for the game.  I started playing in competitions at 6 years old within the academy I was a part of.

Some strengths of my game are hitting the ball far and accurately, ball striking, and determination to be the best I can be.  During my last tournament season, I hit several drives over 300 yards and I hit 61% of my greens in regulation and 70% of fairways. My farthest drive so far is 323 yards.  I have worked hard to increase my driver swing speed and have got it up to 109 mph.

My practice routine consists of putting daily and dividing the rest of my days between working on the range and short game.  During the summer I normally practice around 5-6 days a week when I am not playing in a tournament.

I love incorporating fitness into my weekly routine and go to the gym 5-6 days a week when I am not busy with a tournament.  My parents have been strong supporters not only in my game but also in my fitness routines.  I feel fortunate to have both of my parents with backgrounds in strength and conditioning, physical therapy, and golf performance.  I work on a mixture of movements including strength training, cycling, running, and dance.

I feel very lucky to have the coaching team that I have with Tom Rezendes, PGA as my swing coach and Gene Bakkum, PGA as my short game/course management/mental coach.  They have helped me tremendously with both my game and becoming a better person.  I feel very “free” with them by being open to speaking my mind and reaching out for help/support when I need it.

I feel as though I would be a great addition to a collegiate team because of my determination, skill level, mentality, and competitive spirit.  I thrive to win a national championship at the collegiate level and eventually become a leader on the team.  After college, I hope to play on the LPGA tour and continue my journey there.

Not only am I just determined and hard-working on the golf course, but also in the classroom.  My academics mean a lot to me as I have maintained a 4.0 GPA and First Honors in my Freshman year and a 4.28 GPA and first honors throughout the first semester of my Sophmore year.  I hope to continue to be an excellent student-athlete throughout college.

Thank you for taking the time to view my profile and I look forward to being in contact in the near future!

The second day I was throwing darts at pins and sticking shots from 155 yards and in, to 2 feet at times! With the wind picking up a little, I was flighting my mid-irons and wedges into greens giving me many good looks at birdies. These birdie looks allowed me to shoot a 67 and have a bogey-free round!

  • Longbow Golf Club ; 75.1/133 ; 6140 yds; T9/32; score 76; -2 on back 9 Leading up to this event, I was excited to be able to play golf in a different state and get to meet new people along the way as well. After my practice round, I really enjoyed playing the course and was looking forward to the event. The front nine didn't go so well as it was a challenge at first to get the speed of the greens that morning. However, through these early struggles, I was able to challenge my game in a new way with different shots I don't usually see in California. Hitting off of the gravel area and even playing in between cactuses was a first for me and something that I know will help me along the way in my golf career. I was able to keep a level head throughout my round which enabled me to have a comeback on the back nine by shooting 2 under par. I was rolling in putts since I got the hang of the green speed and knocking my short irons/wedges in close. I was really proud of this turnaround in my round! While even though the results weren't the outcome on the leaderboard I was hoping for, reflecting on my round was an eye-opening experience since I was able to not only play in a different state but also challenge myself with new shots. Continuing to improve upon my chip shots around the green from different tight lies and rough lies by experimenting with my ball position for contact and tempo for distance control is just one of the many takeaways I had from this tournament.

Individually, I qualified to move on to the next round at the North Coast Sectional Playoffs, but due to a prior commitment to play in the USGA Fourball Qualifier, I declined this spot.

  • Finished 1st/15; Scores: 78, 69; For a very gettable course, my first round here wasn’t what I was looking for. When reflecting back on my stats for the day, the area that I saw could use the most improvement was my putting. Therefore, I spent about 2 hours on the putting green after my round. The next day, my work on the putting green paid off which reflected in my score. I shot my first tournament round in the 60s which I am really proud of myself for accomplishing. It’s something I’ve wanted for a long time and have put in the constant hours of practice and play. It felt really great seeing that I turned it around after the first day with my putting and just my game in general. https://jganc.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/jganc22/event/jganc2215/contest/5/leaderboard.htm

  • Finished 7th/50; Scores: 73,78; I was really excited to play in this tournament because of the yardages being longer which I can use to my advantage. I had a pretty good first round at Rancho Solano and was able to use my flighted shot practice to my advantage sticking a lot of shots pretty close allowing for birdie opportunities. I loved being able to go for par 5’s in 2 and even having an eagle putt from 24 feet! My ball striking wasn’t completely on point the second day at Paradise Valley, which in turn, left me with longer putts for birdie. I burned a lot of edges which just motivated me to work even harder on my putting and short game. An overall top 10 finish out of 50 players which is something to build off of. https://jtnc.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/jtnc22/event/jtnc2213/contest/7/leaderboard.htm

  • San Francisco City Championship Semifinals
  • 3/27/22 to 3/27/22
  • Won second match in final 8, 5&4 to advance to semifinals. Shot 3 under par for 14 holes played. Finished in top 4 out of 60 players. In the round of 8, I was excited to play a polished and experienced Pac-12 bound player. I was looking forward to playing a college-committed player to get experience under my belt for the years to come in my game progression. Ever since the second hole, I remained one up on her until hole 11. After hitting a great shot into hole 11, a par 3 about 10 feet from the pin, I had a birdie putt to win the hole. Draining the putt, I was now 2 up on her. I then birdied holes 12 and 13 which now put me at 4 up with 5 to play and also 3 under par for my round heading into hole 14. With my opponent getting into some trouble on hole 14, I knew I had to take advantage of this opening to secure the match which is exactly what I did winning 5&4. I didn’t have my best round the next weekend of the semifinals, but was not willing to just give up all of the hard work I had put in to get to this point. I pushed until the end, but wasn’t able to get the job done this time around. It was a great experience though playing a match play tournament for the first time and also playing with older players to learn from them. I look forward to coming back in all of the years to come! https://thp-2022citychampionship.golfgenius.com/pages/8219293221998581349

  • San Francisco City Championship Round of 16
  • 3/26/22 to 3/26/22
  • Won match and advanced to Final 8. In my first round, I played against one of my friends since I was 5 and really enjoyed the matchplay format! It was a very back and forth match the whole time up until hole 17 where I was one down with one to play. Going into 18, I was determined to play in the next round. I had a vision of how I was going to play these next 2 holes to secure the victory. Knocking my 7iron (165 yds) to about 15 feet on hole 18 (pin tucked in left hand corner near the lake) I gave myself a good look at birdie while she was still about 4 feet out for par. I put a good stroke on the putt and drained it ready to keep playing. Now into extra holes, I hit a great drive to set myself up in prime position for my approach shot which I hit in the exact same spot as earlier in the day. I knew this 38ft putt well and was ready to make it once again. I made the putt and secured the victory winning one up in extra holes. https://thp-2022citychampionship.golfgenius.com/pages/8219293221998581349

  • Finished 7/23; Scores: 76, 83 ; The venue for this tournament, Windsor Golf Club, allowed for me to challenge my course management which was a great learning opportunity for me. I didn’t have a great tournament score-wise, but I was able to take a lot away from it. After playing in this tournament, it inspired me to go learn even more shots to hit such as flighted shots, low drives under trees, shaping shots under and over obstructions, different ball-positioned chip shots, and many more. Even though I didn’t perform as I would have liked to, I think that the takeaways of this tournament were even more valuable to help my game continue growing and improving.

  • Scores: 81, 79, 75 ; T-51/102 ; I was so excited to play in this tournament since it was one of my season-long goals to qualify for! Seeing all the flags and the IMG signs around the putting green/course made me so happy! My goal going into this tournament was to just play as best as I can for that day, to play loose, and to have fun with my playing partners. I played two practice rounds to prepare for the tournament. This was my first tournament using a greens book so it was really interesting learning how to navigate that. The first and second days were a little rough, but I had the best time playing with my partners! I stuck with AimPoint Express for this tournament and it really came around for me on the 3rd round. I wanted to finish strong in the tournament and make it a goal to finish in the top 20 for that day! I had a great putting round (30 putts) and fought through a lot of challenges thrown at me. So overall, I was proud of myself for shooting a 75 and improving over the 3 days. I also reached my goal of finishing inside the top 20 in round 3! I think I also reached my overall goal of playing loose and having fun each day as I really enjoyed playing with other girls from different parts of the world. I got some pretty cool keychains, pins, bracelets, etc. from the girls too which I loved! :)

  • Scores: 84, 96 ; T-76/83 ; Wow! These were the hardest conditions I have ever played in along with a very challenging golf course. The course average was 84.62 on day 1. I was challenged with 50 mph winds and having to hit my 210 club on a 150-yard par 3!! I learned a lot from this tournament with the obvious one being how to manage my game better when playing in the wind. The first day of the tournament I tripled a hole, but the second day I came back a birdied that hole! That was the highlight of my second round! Combined with the crazy conditions and my game not being on point, it just turned out to be a rough tournament. The course was so pretty though and in great condition! Even though I didn't perform how I wanted to, I'm so glad I got the opportunity to play Monterey Peninsula CC Shore course and hope to come back and beat it soon!

  • 6/10/21 to 6/10/21
  • Score: 79 ; Placed 19th/44 ; I was excited going into this event since it was my first ever USGA event! I started out slow on the front nine and knew I needed to bounce back on the last nine holes. I put the opening nine holes behind me and moved on to give myself the best opportunity to get it back together. I ended up switching my game around and shot even par on the back nine. I was super proud of myself after this tournament since I finished strong and completed my first USGA event against a very strong field.

  • JGANC Junior World Qualifier
  • 5/29/21 to 5/29/21
  • Score: 74 ; Placed T-2/20 ; I was super excited going into this tournament because I wanted to qualify for the IMG Junior World. +2 was good enough to put me in a playoff! After about 1 hour waiting for the rest of the groups to come in it was time to tee off in the sudden death playoff against 3 other girls for 2 spots. Going into the second hole, it was just me and another girl for the final spot. We were still tied going into hole 4 (a par 5 that is reachable in two for me). I hit a great drive and had a perfect set up to reach it in two, which I did, with a great 3 wood. I ended up winning the playoff on that hole and qualifying! I was super proud of myself because I used my length to my advantage to achieve one of my season goals!

  • 5/02/21 to 5/02/21
  • Score: 75 ; T-4/23 ; This season I wanted to make it one of my goals to qualify for the IMG Junior World Championship in San Diego, CA. This qualifier was my first chance to reach that goal and I wanted to get the job done. I was pretty nervous going into the tournament since I wanted to qualify. I started off with a 3-putt from 4 feet on the first hole which resulted in a double bogey. Not the best start to the tournament at all, but I knew that there were still 17 more holes to go. I motivated myself to get it back together and not give up. On those last 17 holes, I shot even par, which resulted in a +2 round. Even though I was 1 stroke off of qualifying I was still proud of myself for pulling it back together to finish strong.

  • Scores: 80, 75 ; Placed T-5/21 ; Although I didn't have my best game on day one of this tournament, I was still able to find a way to get through the round and make the best of it. I started out with a triple bogey on hole one which is always a hard way to start off a round. I was able to bounce back from that and still salvage an okay round. The second day was a good mental test to see if I could shake off the day before. I personally think I did a pretty good job of that. I put the first day behind me and just focused on being in the moment. I ended up parring the first hole on the second day as well!

  • Scores: 74, 72 ; Placed T-1/24 ; Prior to coming into this tournament I made a goal for myself to prepare myself well to be able to perform to the best of my abilities. I played multiple practice rounds at the course that I think helped me a lot when performing. My mindset going into the tournament was to not put much stress on myself and to be loose and have fun. I think this mindset really helped me succeed in the tournament because it felt easier to not let mistakes get the best of me and to swing freely. I got to play with my friends both days which made it even more fun! I had a lot of birdie opportunities which I know with hard work and practice will eventually drop.

I maintained a positive attitude throughout the event which helped me a lot. I gave myself multiple opportunities for birdies which just shows more room for improvement! I hit 79% of the fairways the second day and 83% of the greens on the second day.
