What’s the benefit of being the only left-handed person in my family? Well, it means that I didn’t have to share a set of clubs with my sisters! My parents bought me a set of junior clubs when I was in elementary school. I believe I took them to the course one time, missed every ball I swung at, did not like the experience, and I didn’t touch the clubs again for about six years. I sure am glad that things changed! I may be relatively new to playing the game of golf, but I have been around this sport my entire life! My granddad was an avid golfer and my dad plays as well. I’ve also watched my two older sisters play golf for years, but basketball had always been my sport. My middle school golf coach convinced me to “try” playing golf for him my 8th grade year. Well, I did, and I loved it! That encouraged me to try out for the high school team the following fall. Playing my first year on the high school golf team confirmed my decision to put all of my effort into improving my golf game.
I am fortunate to have a very involved and supportive family! Usually I have both of my parents, at least one sister, and all three of my grandparents on the course to watch me play. My parents and my coach can see my potential, and I have assured them that I will do my part to be successful because I really would like to be able to play golf in college! I have been working weekly with a golf professional, Mr. Jim Schacht, who has tremendously helped me with the mechanics of my swing. He is very encouraging in my ability to pursue college-level golf.
Playing golf is what made me realize that I am really a competitive person. Golf makes me want to beat my previous score each time I’m on the course! Aside from being competitive, I’m also coachable. I welcome instruction and advice on how to make improvements as a player. Being an optimistic person and having a good attitude, I think, are benefits that will enable me to continue to improve.
I have academic goals as well. I would like to carry an A average through graduation! Having a high ACT score is also on my list of objectives. Most importantly, I would like to be able to be looked favorably upon for golf scholarship opportunities for college. I know that maintaining good grades, having a high ACT score, and proving my ability in golf will all impact my scholarship opportunities. I am looking forward to college and I hope to be able to attend and play golf for a school somewhere here in the Southeastern US! I have a few very different career paths in mind, but I have yet to settle upon one. The first option is to pursue a career in dentistry. The second is to follow a career in some aspect of tourism/hospitality or sports management involving golf. My third option would be marketing sales involving golf as well.
Outside of school I am active in my church, I find time to volunteer in my community through service projects such as food drives, and I spend time with my friends and family.
I look forward to improving as a student, as an athlete, and as person in general. I want to be a good representative of my family, my school, and my community. I know that setting goals and working hard to achieve them will help me to be successful in any path in life I may choose!
