My name is Brooklyn Beatty and I am a 16 year old girl from Calgary Alberta who loves hockey more than anyone can imagine. I tried so many sports as a kid, including competitive swimming, and taekwondo yet I continued to come back to hockey. I would always watch the Calgary Flames play and in between periods I would go in my basement and practice hockey with my dad. However, I did start playing hockey later than most kids. My first time playing hockey was my first year of u13. Since I started playing at the u13 level, I have had so much drive because I have had to climb my way past the lack of experience with rigorous on and off ice training. The training from swimming gave me a cardio advantage over other skaters and has allowed me to develop muscle well. By starting hockey later than most kids, I am not burnt out and I am still as in love with the game as I was when I was 11. I don't just use team events for my development, I work with elite coaches, such as Daniel Fujita who is the Calgary Flames skating coach to enhance my skating, hockey awareness and IQ, puck placement, and proper shooting technique. Faceoffs are one of my main strengths and you can always rely on me when you need to win a faceoff. I can either win against anybody and place the puck where it needs to be, or I can tie up the other center and prevent scoring opportunities for the other team. My hockey awareness allows me to recognize certain players on the ice and call plays off of those players strengths, and off of the other teams weaknesses. My drive for hockey also translates over to school, I am very determined in school as I want to be an athletic therapist, paramedic or both. I am taking sports medicine in school which allows me to volunteer for my school's teams and gain experience and confidence for my career paths. I am currently half way through grade 11 and I am sitting at an overall 3.8 GPA. In Calgary, ice times are limited with only 75 minute ice times, which makes it difficult for my team to play in out of town tournaments. However I counteract this with training cardio and with doing speed intervals to build my on ice endurance and speed, which allows me to stay sharp and precise in those tournaments. I am very coachable and I am always willing to learn how to improve my game as well. I find goalies the most valuable and important players on a team so I always make sure to block shots when I can, to take bodies out front, to make sure girls aren't poking at my goalie, and I always make sure my goalie is okay after a goal and I will always go up and talk to her after goals, big saves, and end of periods. While playing hockey, I also play softball. I am a third baseman and center fielder and I use softball as a sport to help train for hockey and by playing softball it prevents me from burning out from hockey. On top of school, hockey, and softball I am also a hockey referee. Since 2022 I have worked as an hockey official working my way up to a level 2 this year. As a level 2 referee I was selected this year to be a linesman in the U18 B provincials and the head referee in the U13AA provincials.
