My name is Sydney Carter. I started to play hockey as a player when I was 5 years old and living in Medicine Hat, Alberta where I was born. We also had a backyard rink that my dad made for me and my brother. Our family has always loved hockey. When I was about 8 years old I started to play goalie and have never turned back. We moved to Kamloops BC at about that same time which is where I have played the majority of my minor hockey both with boys and girls. Over the years I have been part of many spring league teams and was the MVP after winning the Stampede Classic in Calgary one year with my spring team the BC Comets. In Grades 8, 9 and 10 I was the only female goalie at the Hockey Canada Academy at Valleyview High School where I played mostly with boys. In my last year that I played in Kamloops I played for the Bantam AAA Female Rep team and I had a 18-1-1 record with a 1.55 GAA. I played on Team Okanagen U16 2 years in a row for the Provincial tournament.
Last season I was a goaltender for the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers (U17) who play in the Female Midget AAA league in BC. This season I am playing for the Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) Prep team in Penticton BC. I am in grade 11 and graduate in 2018. I have been on the Honour Roll the last 2 years at my school and so far this year I have a 88% average. Last season I had a record of 16-9-2 with a 1.51 GAA and .941 save percentage which includes all league and playoff games as well as exhibition. We played many games against U19 Prep teams including an exhibition game against the Japanese National team that was in Kamloops for the Womens IIHF World Championships (Video of game included). I have done private lessons with Eli Wilson (Carey Price's goalie coach) at his High Performance group in Kelowna, BC and have been going to summer camps with him for 5 years. I have had many other very good goalie coaches over the years including Dan DePalma (Kamloops Blazers), Chad Carder (Westside Warriors), Pasco Valana (Hockey Canada), Jean-Ian Fillatrault (Colorado Rockies system). Our goalie coach at OHA is Tyler Love who is also the goalie coach for the Portland Winterhawks. This past summer I was invited to the BC Hockey evaluation camp for our Provincial U18 team.
This current season at OHA I have been lucky to play on a team with some very good players who I also get to practice against every day. Going to OHA is very much like what I would expect at University. I live with a billet family and have to keep up good grades while also travelling lots for hockey and practicing every day including twice a few days a week when we have goalie sessions. Our team has 3 Canadian Team U18 players and 1 USA Team U18 player who was my goalie partner. During our recent goalie specific on ice Combine testing I did very well and in finished third behind the top 2 male goalies at OHA in a few of the stations for net movement quickness. The Combine testing was done for all goalies on OHA's 6 male and 2 female teams.
This current season has just recently ended and I was very proud to be part of the team that won both the regular season title and playoff championship for the CSSHL. During the regular season I finished with the best winning percentage and most wins of any goalie in the league. I have included in the transcript download section the final stats in the CSSHL for Prep goalies in the regualar season, playoffs, and for both combined. My stats in each were very good as I finished in the combined league and playoff stats with the second best goals against average and second best save percentage.
I am looking for a university that will allow me to continue to portray great hockey as well as academics. My dream is to one day play for Canada in the Olympics. I work hard on and off the ice, because I know hard work will bring me great places.
