After playing two years with the Chicago Mission, I was asked to play for the Chicago Bruins to learn how to play defense. The Bruins team I was on was not expected to make it to state or even to win a lot of games. Going into the season, I was excited to prove everyone wrong and show them what my team was really made of. Through hard work and leadership, I was nominated captain by my coaches and teammates.
During one of my highschool basketball games, I broke my ankle and was out of basketball for the rest of the season, and hockey for 2 months. Even after this, I was able to captain my team to first place at state and second place at nationals.
Although we lost the national championship in a hard battle, losing 2-1, the experiences that I made impacted me much more than a first place trophy ever would have. I learned that to be successful in life, you need hard work and determination, and you can't let what others say get you down.
These lessons have effected my athletics and academics, as I am now playing on a AAA hockey team, and have maintained a 4.0 GPA in school. They have also made me realize that I want to play college hockey, because this game is a part of me that I am not willing to give up. Throughout my life, I have always had 18 girls push me to do my best, academically and physically, and coaches who have inspired me on and off the ice to do better. This sport is not just a game, it is apart of my life that has impacted me in every way possible.
