Personal Statement
Hello, I am Gillian O’Rourke! Throughout my childhood and growing into who I am today, lacrosse was always a constant joy I had. I want to continue playing lacrosse at the collegiate level because I want to perfect my skills, and I love being able to grow as a person and seeing a sport I love grow in popularity. Another thing I love about lacrosse is being able to interact with the youth and seeing the next generation of lacrosse players grow into players. I referee a youth lacrosse program in my town, and give goalie lessons to beginners interested in the position. Seeing others experience this sport and fall in love with it, is always something that brings me joy.
As a two sport athlete; playing basketball and lacrosse, and playing the cello in my school orchestra, I’m able to incorporate more than just lacrosse knowledge into my play. The strategies and leadership skills I learn in basketball not only help my personal game, but also help me reach out to my teammates if I’m explaining something. Playing the cello taught me work ethic. Not everything is going to come natural and most of the time I need to put in hard work if I really want something.
My father once told me that I am a student athlete, meaning the student is always going to come before the athlete. Growing up my academics have been my number one priority. I love to learn and have always worked to push myself through my academics. Finding my favorite subject and focusing on that, but still continuing to grow in other subjects. I’m excited to see what college classes hold for me and what more I can learn in the future.
