Personal Statement

Hello Coaches,

My name is Abbey Sugrue and I am a senior at Ozark High School in Ozark MO. First off, thank you for taking the time to look at my profile. Secondly I would like to take a moment to introduce my character and soccer back ground to you. I have been playing soccer since I was 4 years old at the local YMCA. As years passed, my family learned that soccer was not just something fun to go do on Saturdays but it was something to invest my time in for the future. I joined a local club called Xtreme SC my fifth grade year. I loved the traveling and the more competitive speed as I grew as a player. No longer was I playing just to have fun, I was out to beat any girl my age that tried to stop me. I never have missed a season since age 4 and I to this day dual roster with Xtreme SC and 417FC (417Elite). Indoor soccer and futsal have a part in my career but I enjoy my time outside on the field much more.

Aside from growing up with soccer as my entire world, I loved school. I have always had a rough time with spelling and I don't always get math on the first try, but I refuse to let that stop me. I love beating others in my studies as much as I love it out on the field. After all, there are no fouls in the classroom. I strive on a daily basis to keep organized and up to date if not ahead of the game with my studies. Late is not in my vocabulary. I tend to use soccer as my oasis from stress at school. I find my zen within the goal, and I use that to help me keep relaxed and aware in my classes. I have been apart of the honors program and accelerated classes since the 7th grade at Ozark. In my mind, challenging myself and getting a B is much more worth it, than sitting in a class and having an easy A. My love for the sciences has shown many times in my course choices in high school. From Chemistry I and II to Horticulture I love to study anything to explain how our world works.

As for why I want to play college soccer, the reasons are the same as they have always been. I love the sport, and if given the opportunity to continue on I will accept it with a humble heart. I pictured myself being apart of something bigger since day one, and a team is just the way I do that. At that point it is not only about what I can do for myself, but what I can do for 20 other girls that need me. Obviously, money is an ever growing issue for college kids today, I would love to transform something I love to help me pay for my studies.

I may be competing against 18 million other athletes for a spot on a college level team, but that is not how I see it. I see myself, as a girl who will get the job done, efficiently and proactively. I do not sit around, I like to be going and never stop until it is done. If I am told to run my only question is how far. I will push, pull, and give every ounce of what I have in me for 90 minutes. The best part is, I will walk away with a smile on my face after. I can promise you that I am a hard worker and worth the choice.
