Hi Coaches,
My name is Taylor Tomey and I have been swimming my whole life and would love to swim in college. My ultimate goal is to continue swimming competitively while earning a degree and seeing where my career takes me. I am a hard-working, fun-to-be-around, 1st born child who will not let you down!
I believe I would be an asset to any team because of the work ethic I have learned in my 14 years of being an athlete. I believe "Attitude is Everything" and maintaining the mental mindset required to learn from the bad days and look for how to grow and improve from them is the key to success.
When I first reluctantly joined a swim team I remember the pain of watching other swimmers get blue ribbons while I got a red ribbon—or worse, no ribbon at all. This made me stronger at a very young age in overcoming failure. It didn't take long to realize I did not want to quit but I wanted to get stronger and faster. What I wanted was to be good—really good and work harder than others so I could accomplish my goals.
And that’s what I set out to do. In time I earned a fistful of blue ribbons—which only served to motivate me even more. It was in 6th grade that I decided to join Phoenix Swim Club and get serious about swimming. When I hit my first Sectional cut summer of 2021 my future goals got real. The feeling of being in the fastest pool in the country with all of those really fast swimmers from all over the place was epic. It was a feeling of accomplishment that I haven't felt.
My passion for swimming has grown deeper every day, every mile in the pool, and every year. What I have learned from competing in numerous swim meets is that my mind is so powerful and if I can dream it, I can achieve it. So many times in training and competing, I have imagined my race before the race and accomplished exactly what I imagined.
Swimming has changed me as a person in that I am so much more confident and positive about my life and my future. It has taught me that hard work pays off. Swimming also has taught me to be self-motivated by getting to 5:00 AM practices 3x's a week before school and 5 days after school plus Saturdays. Though it is not always easy, I know that I am driven to succeed and that with positive coaching I can do anything in life.
While I do not know exactly what I plan to study in college, I am looking to attend a college that offers competitive academics as well as athletics. I love coaching Special Olympics swimmers and volunteering all over Phoenix as part of National Charity League.
I am interested in learning more about the opportunities available and hope you consider me to be a part of your program!!
