Personal Statement
Hi, My name is Brooke Wedekind, and I am a senior at Rockford Christian High School. I have been swimming since I was 4 years old, and have been swimming competitively since I was 9 years old. I am on the Rockford Christian High School Girls Varsity swim team, and when it is not high school season, I swim year round for the Rockford Marlins Swim Club. One of my current goals is to make it to state in the 100 breast, within the next year. I have dedicated my whole life to this one sport, and I wouldn't change it for the world. I am very determined to make it far in this sport and have a very competitive spirit. I like to think that I get my determination and competitiveness from my dad, who has taught me to have a good mental aspect and to never give up. I am a very hard worker, and give my all everyday in and out of the pool. I am a team player and am always there to motivate my fellow teammates, and to do my absolute best for the team, no matter the circumstances. I am also focused and serious about my own individual goals as well. I love how swimming has both a team aspect and individual aspect. It is truly the best of both worlds. I also have learned to have an optimistic attitude even if the practices are challenging, or if I have a bad race. For example, I was at my last chance meet to make regional times. I swam my 50 free and I ended up gaining time. I was pretty dissapointed, but I knew I had my 200 breast coming up next, so I knew I had to shift my mindset. I remember going up behind the blocks before my 200 breast and telling myself that I could get this regional time. I needed to drop 3 seconds to get the regional cut, and I ended up crushing the regional time and dropped 6 seconds! I was so happy and felt so accomplished. Moments like these motivate me to work hard everyday and teach me to never give up, even if times get rough.
Besides being an athlete, I am very invested in my academic career. I am taking 2 honors classes, and 3 AP Classes this year, and will be aiming to get A's in all of them to maintain my above 4.0 GPA. One of my honors classes that I am taking this year is AP Biology. I am the most excited to take this class because I have always found the human body interesting. I would definitely like to major in something in the medical field, (specifically Physical Therapy). I have learned how to have good time management to excel in both my academics and athletics. I know being a student-athlete will be a lot of hard work, but I am committed and up for the challenge!
