Personal Statement
Hi -
My name is Kathryn Hurlbut and I'm grateful and thankful for you taking the time to read my profile.
Knowing you probably have more profiles to read than you probably have time for I'll try to keep it short and sweet ~
I'm a junior at North Bend High School at in North Bend, Oregon and just finished for the summer. I'm reaching out in hopes of looking for the right fit for me for college and potential scholarship opportunities.
I feel I'm a great candidate simply because of my life story. I've been raised my Dad all my life and although I'm a girl he always taught me the importance of independence and hard work and taking nothing for granted. I didn't play tennis until later on in my youth and started around 7th grade. I spent my first couple of years in high school playing for Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach which has an amazing tennis program that is ranked nationally every year and produces some premiere D1 tennis players. It was a real struggle for me and truthfully I was so happy for even making Junior Varsity my sophmore year. I experienced so much failure and humility playing some great tennis players that it really taught me the importance of working hard. I continued working hard over the summer and it just so happened my Dad moved me to Oregon for my junior year. I played tennis here at North Bend and was the #1 doubles player here and we lost to only one team all year. We placed 2nd in Districts and ended up placing 4th in State for 4A on May 19th in Corvallis OR. My main takeaway was really understanding the importance of teamwork, never giving up, and understanding that you never know when your opportunity may come and you have to be ready to make the most of it.
I've also always worked extremely hard in school, and self admittedly I know I'm not the smartest, but I've pushed myself to take as many AP classes as possible and have carried a 3.8 GPA this year and a 3.3 cumulative GPA over my high school years.
I want to be a student athlete, and as captain of my team this year, and languishing in prior years I understand the importance of both humility and leadership. I think I bring a high character, over achieving, hard working spirit that also understands the importance of giving whether it to be my teammates, my community or people less fortunate than I am.
I would love the opportunity to showcase my tennis ability, my academics and what I feel is most important - my overall character and work ethic.
Thanks again for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing from you!!
Sincerely,
Kathryn Hurlbut
