Hello, my name is Coco Velasquez, I am currently a sophomore at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, AZ. I live at home with my family, 2 dogs, 4 cats and 2 gineau pigs. I enjoy going to church, dancing, singing, and learning new languages during my free time. I am currently in my 9th year of track. I began club track with the Arizona Flames Track Club in 2014 and I am still with the club outside of High School Track. I was a company dancer trained in jazz, tap and ballet. I had to choose between track and dancing because of the lack of time and I eventually chose track. I also try to play softball when time permits as it is also one of my passions. I am currently playing Girls Flag Football at my high school. My events began with running the 100m, 200m and shotput. I began to gravitate to the throwing events and began throwing the turbo javelin and discus when I got old enough. I have achieved All-American status in my events at both USATF Youth Outdoor Nationals and Junior Olympics. I have held Arizona state records in Shot put and turbo/aero javelin.
I began my freshman season opener this year with a Javelin mark that automatically qualified me for Arizona State Track and Field Championship for High School Division 1. I have provisionally qualified in my other two events, shot put and discus. I am currently ranked first in the state in the Freshman division in javelin with my PR of 120’9”, second in the shot put with a PR of 35’1.5”and discus with a PR of 103’ 1”. I still have another meet prior to the state championship to improve my marks.
I returned to club track as soon as my high school season was completed in May. My first meet was the USATF Arizona State Championship May 28-29th. I was able to attend the NSAF Nike Outdoor Nationals, USATF Youth Outdoor Nationals, USTAF Junior Olympic Arizona State Championship and Region 10 championship and finally the USATF Junior Olympics this summer.
My future includes continuing to improve in all my events, continue to do better in my academics, volunteer more often, mentor others, finish high school and get accepted to college to continue my education and participate in track and field at the next level. I haven’t decided on what I am going to study as of yet but as I continue my journey, I am sure it will become more apparent.
