I set goals for myself at the end of every track season. After my Freshman year at Ithaca High School, where I threw a disappointing distance in the New York State Championships, I set goals for myself and talked to my dad about how I was going to achieve them. I started working out in the gym through the Summer and Winter; I hired a personal trainer who used to throw in college; and I started to work with the throwing coach at the local college on the discus, hammer and weight. I also entered collegiate events under an "unattached" athlete. I reached my goals: getting back to the State Championships; throwing over 120 feet; and breaking the school record (which is now 130'11"). My Junior year I was throwing consistently in the 120's which I was pleased with , but I really wanted 140'. I was able to hit the distance in practice, but not when it counted. I work hard on the field, but I work harder in the classroom. I will carry these qualities with me into college and onto your team. I don't know what I want to do yet in college, but I have many interests.
Junior Year update: 5/1/18: I just qualified for the State Championships today with a throw of 123". I have been throwing 130's and hitting 140' in practice recently. I'm much more comfortable with my technique now and hope to break the school record again, and be one of the top throwers in New York by June 2018.
Update: I finished third in the state for Large Schools, but didn't throw in the combined Small school- Large school competition the next day because I had to take the ACTs.
I'm going to hit the gym hard this upcoming winter to reach my goals.
