Personal Statement
I am in my senior year at Exeter-West Greenwich Senior High School in Rhode Island. I am 5ft 5 inches, 135lbs, and built like an athlete. I have been competing in pole-vaulting for the past three and a half years in high school and gymnastics for over thirteen years. In track, I qualified and competed in states where I placed fourth my junior year and continued to the New England competition where I placed in the top twelve athletes. In gymnastics, I have qualified and competed in States then continued onto the Regional competition in grades eight through twelve.
Not only do I keep up with my physical stature, but I also excel a great deal in the classroom. I received the HOBY Leadership Award my sophomore year, being the only student chosen out of my class to be apart of a leadership retreat. Coming out of my junior year, I finished with a 3.6 GPA.
As I keep busy with schoolwork and sports, I am also a part of several extracurricular activities. These include: National Art Honor Society (11/12), Student Council (11/12), School DECA-Reporter(11),School DECA-Vice Pres.(12), State DECA Reporter(11), State DECA Reporter (12), School Store Coordinator(11),Model Legislature-Rep(11-12), Varsity Gymnastics Team Member(9-12)Captain,Class Council(9-12), Ski/Snowboard Club(11/12),and SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)(11/12). I not only love to learn but I always challenge myself to the next level.
Outside of school, I wanted to do something fun! So I decided to enroll in Barbizon School of Modeling in February 2009. I graduated from the program in December 2009. I have competed in various shows across New England and have participated in fashion shows within the state of Rhode Island. I love trying new things, so I make sure I expose myself to many different areas of interest.
Along with sports and modeling, I volunteer any chance I get. I love to help people in any way possible. Since 8th grade, I have taken on the responsibility of volunteering 100+ hours every summer at Rhode Island Hospital. This summer is currently my fourth year. I assist in the Comprehensive Cancer Center, PT/OT Dept. and various places around the hospital to have maximum exposure to the medical environment. Not only do I volunteer during the summer, it continues throughout the year. I have volunteered with Amgen at their annual coat drive for a local churches, assisting those in need with coats/jackets during the winter to stay warm. I am a Red Cross Assistant and I set up a clothing drive for a elderly housing complex in the neighboring town that burned down in March. I was devastated when I heard, so the first thought that came to mind was to help keep the people clothed and assist them while their homes were unobtainable. I pursued to collect at my high school where I was very successful in obtaining 12 trash bags full of clothes! I volunteer at my church, St. Francis de Sales as a kitchen assistant for their Generations of Faith Program for 4 hours every month. We offer dinners and/or brunch to families that come in with their children for an extra boost of "Living in Faith". I also continue to baby-sit and assist those in need around the neighborhood.
I am an individual who likes to lead others. Having been the captain of my high school gymnastics team for four years as well as captain of the track team. I have kept all my girls motivated,
encouraged and have helped them to be the best they can possibly be. We all grow and learn together and become stronger as one during the course of the season.
Along with my academic and personal achievements, extracurricular activities, and volunteer services, I work two part time jobs. I have been working at Dunkin Donuts since I turned fourteen, so this is my third year. This past summer I started another part time position at Narragansett Town Beach. These jobs require me to obtain maximum responsibility but still require me to manage my time effectively so I can continue to enjoy my youth.
When it comes to the college search, I tend to look for schools that have majors and minors I am interested in. I am also looking for a school that fits my personal needs as well. Although I am open to different types of schools, I have recently had more of a desire to attend a rural, mid sized school, so no more than 8,000-10,000 students. I want the classroom sizes to be reasonable, about 25 students per class, so I can focus on the schoolwork, have a personal connection with my teacher, and have an identity in the class as an individual. When it comes to the schools academics, I am looking for an extensive list of majors and minors because I am currently undecided. I do have an interest in medical sciences along with communications. In reference to sports, I have a desire to participate on a college team that is constantly improving and challenging for me, knowing I would make a great addition with my athletic drive.
I strive to be the best I can be and encourage others to do the same. I am constantly looking to challenge myself; I do not like to settle for the easiest way or else I get bored. I have a huge desire and passion to get better everyday in whatever task I complete, always learning something new by trial and error.
I am looking forward to my years ahead knowing that I will be meeting new people, experiencing new personalities and the excitement of a new environment!
