Personal Statement
JOSIE RAINES IS: INTELLIGENT, ATHLETIC, ENERGETIC, PASSIONATE AND DEDICATED!
My passion for competition began even before I stepped out on the track. I started in competitive gymnastics at the age of 5 and continued until age 11. At that time I wanted to participate in school related activities so I joined the school track team and took up cheerleading in the 6th grade. My older brother (Kyle) got me interested in track and field. I enjoyed watching his team and the fun they had and it made me realize I wanted to be a part of something like that. After high school, my brother earned an athletic scholarship to compete collegiately.
I have been very successful in track from the beginning. I have participated in individual events and relay events. My specialty has been long jump and sprints because that is where my team needed me but I am confident that I could also excel in mid distance events. I am a two time WV AA State Champion in Long Jump and have consistently placed at the top in all my events at the state meets. I also hold my high school records in the 100, 200, Long Jump and also my 4X1 team has the record. I have earned all conference all three years of my high school career and have been named MVP of the track team each year since 6th grade.
I have had success academically as well. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA thru high school and am ranked in the top of my class.
I understand success does not come easy. It is thru hard work and dedication. A strong work ethic has been instilled in me from an early age. My family owns a small farm where we raise beef cattle and grow our own hay (the little square bales that have to picked up by hand)!
I am determined to run track on the collegiate level and pursue an education in Speech Therapy. My interest in speech therapy stems from my recent experience when my grandmother was in the hospital after suffering a stroke. Of all her caregivers I identified most with her speech therapists. They seemed to really enjoy their job as well as wanting to help others. Watching them interact with my “Nanny” I realized that is something I would like to do.
Once again, I am determined to run track on the collegiate level for a college that can provide me the quality education that I desire. I am confident that I will be an asset to any school that chooses me.
