Personal Statement
Running has always been the highlight of my athletic career. Ever since elementary school, I remember loving to run. As I progressed through school and sampled a variety of sports—including a serious segment of gymnastics—I realized that running is for me. It gives me a reason to wake up early and be productive, a group of supportive people, and much more.
During my freshman year of high school, I made my way to the state competitions in both track and cross country. Even though I was extremely proud to have qualified for these meets, I was unsatisfied. I put in work over the summer to become a better athlete physically and mentally.
Sophomore year, my cross country team qualified as a team for the state competition. We had won the female sectional competition as a team for the first time in our school’s history. We went on to compete at state, where we took 10th as a team, and I took 29th for Division 2 individually. The joy of succeeding as a team is a feeling I do not wish to part with, so I always try to build up my teammates around me, just as previous upperclassmen have done for me.
During the 2018 track season, I saw serious improvements in my performances. I continued to drop time in the 800m run, earning 6th place at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships for Division 2. I also competed with the 4x400m relay team to take second place at WIAA State with a school record. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities I have had to race in WIAA state competitions.
In addition to track and cross country, I have been becoming more involved in triathlons. I competed in my first triathlon in the summer of 2017, and intend on doing more, longer races. Since I have been swimming for four years now, the combination of this with running and cycling is a good fit. Seeing as this is a growing sport, I am considering continuing triathlons after high school.
In regards to academics, I am a motivated and diligent student. I take difficult classes not because I am forced to, but out of love of learning. My education is of great value to me, and I feel obligated to use it to the best of my abilities. For these reasons, I work to maintain good grades in my classes.
In the end, I see competing as a cross country, track and field, or triathlon athlete as an important goal for my future. I believe that with hard work, I will be able to improve upon my athletic career and be an excellent addition to a collegiate team.
