Hi my name is Ronginae Davis. I am currently enrolled at Junipero Serra High School located in Gardena, California. I am a Senior during this 2013-2014 school year. My high school experience so far has been fun and exciting. My freshmen year (2010-2011), I was fortunate enough to make the varsity volleyball team. In November 2010, I was a part of Serra’s girls’ volleyball team winning league championship by going undefeated (8-0) in the Camino Real League. We advanced to the semi-finals of the CIF-SS playoffs before losing to Brethren Christian High School. This is the furthest the girls’ volleyball team has ever advanced at Serra High. Since my first year at Serra till now, I have been able to balance volleyball and schoolwork very well. My 9th grade year, I was placed on Principal’s Honor Roll for receiving a 4.2 during my fall and spring semester. This GPA allowed me to be ranked number 3 out of 207 students during the fall semester and three out of 198 students during the spring semester. My 10th grade year, I was also placed on Principal’s Honor Roll for receiving a 4.0 during the fall semester, and a 4.2 during the spring semester. This put me at a ranking of number 4 out of 173 students the fall semester and 4 out of 164 students my spring semester, & My 11th grade year, I kept my grades up and maintained on the Principal's Honor Roll for receiving a 4.2, ranked 8 out of 149 students in the fall semester & ranked 12 out of 148 students in the spring. Senior year was the most challenging year for me. However, I was still able to remain in the top 10% of my class as I balanced, family, AP classes, college classes, volleyball, community service, volunteer, college commitment and making adult decisions for my future.
My sophomore volleyball season wasn’t as successful. Unfortunately, I tore my ACL and meniscus on April 10, 2011 during my club season with Beach Cities Volleyball Club. I received reconstructive surgery on July 14, 2011. After the procedure was over, it became very painful and frustrating but I pushed through it. Even though I have progressed since surgery, this process never gets any easier because I believe I have to be better than I was before. During my time off, I did tons of physical therapy to strengthen my knee. Also during my time off, I supported my teammates on both my school and club team. My role on the Serra volleyball team was to be the manager for varsity, where I was in charge for keeping stats. Although I wasn’t playing, I still attended every practice and every game to show my support. I recently just started playing competitive volleyball again because it has officially been a year since my doctor released me to play without physical restrictions.
Besides school and volleyball, I like to help my community as well. I volunteer for “Special Olympics” at least three times a year. This year I was a part of the “Bocce” games where I was a line judge and score keeper. My experience is always enjoyable when I work with the disabled children and adults that are a part of “Special Olympics”.
My short-term goal in volleyball is to get better each and every day. It is as simple as picking one of my weaknesses and working on just that. Once I get better and show improvement, I can go on to my next weakness. Another one of my goals in volleyball is to not hold back or be scared of making a mistake. Once I stop having a fear of letting my team down, I believe I will become a better player. My long term goal with this sport is to play in college and to get a scholarship so I can help my parents pay for my college tuition. Also, I hope to reach my full potential as much as possible. I want to be able to look back six years from now and say “I put my all in volleyball, and I did the best I could do to be better than great”.
This year, I see myself graduating from Junipero Serra High School with a 4.0 or higher. My desire is to attend Howard Universty then go to graduate school. After I finish graduate school I still will have several years to go. I say this because I want to become a Pediatric Registered Nurse and eventually get my Doctorates in Nursing. I have always loved and adored children, so I know this will be the perfect field for me. When I get older, the one thing I want is to be successful. When I say successful, I don’t mean being filthy rich but just to be happy with where I’m at in life.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement,
Ronginae A. Davis
