Personal Statement

My name is Jacquelyn Yee and I will be graduating Mercy San Francisco in 2016.  I began playing volleyball around fourth grade and immediately fell in love with the sport.  I fell in love with the competitiveness and intensity of volleyball.  I would like to describe myself as a short girl striving to succeed in a tall girl's sport.  Because of my short height, I first began as a setter.  At the age of 14, a coach took notice of my high vertical jump and began to train me to become an outside hitter.  Because of my flexibility to transition from one position to another, I was able to play all around for most of my club and high school career.  Throughout my volleyball career, I have struggled against the stereotypes about my height.  My personality prohibits me to become discouraged and I work harder to increase my jumps and reflexes because of it.  I want to use the same attitude not only towards volleyball but also for swimming, by pushing myself harder to beat my personal records, and towards my academics, to achieve the highest grades possible.  In the future, I strive to attend a school where I can make an impact on their academic and athletic departments.

From my sports career as a volleyball player and swimmer, I have learned a great deal about being a leader.  Being a captain for most of my athletic career has given me a vast amount of knowledge on how to lead people and work as a team.  I used this leadership aspect to lead a volunteer club called the Great SF Leos.  My goal for the club is to recruit more members and help the community.  Our club goes out to the community and assist in any available opportunities such as planting trees, cleaning beaches/schools, fundraising, help feeding homeless/elderly, etc.  I would also like to use this aspect in the future by joining a leadership club in college and help make a difference to the community.
