Personal Statement

Hello to all coaches, My name is Carly Johnson and volleyball is my passion. I play year-round on my high school team, club team and on an adult league with my mom. I am very dedicated to doing everything I can to improve my skills in this sport. I have always been praised for how well I take direction and my "athlete mentality". I always try my best to not let mistakes affect my attitude and the rest of my play during a game. I believe it is very important to keep a strong head while on the court and even when things are not going so well, to never stop communicating with your teammates. Communication plays an extremely important roll in how well a team plays together. I have been playing volleyball since I was 10 years old and played on my first team in the 7th grade. I started out as a setter and was the main setter on my 7th and 8th grade teams and as a freshman on my JV team. I made Varsity as a sophomore and was a back up setter and DS. As a junior, I was the main setter for the Varsity team and ran a 5-1 offense until I injured my wrist near the end of the season. Once I was injured, I moved to the DS position, and as a senior I was the Libero. I am interested in attending the University of Montana. I love the area it is in and it has the major I would like to study. The major I am interested in is "Wildlife Biology" to become a Wildlife Veterinarian. I love the outdoors and being surrounded by wildlife. I enjoy river rafting, dirtbike riding, camping, snwboarding, hiking and any many other outdoor activities. I was a team captain this year as a senior and never missed a practice. I was always the last one to leave practice because I believe it is very important to help take down the net and as a team captain, I felt it was my responsibility to take care of those tasks and to express to my teammates that it is important for them to help as well. I have never imagined a time when I would not be playing volleyball. It has always been a goal of mine to be able to play in college. Although intramural volleyball would be fun, I would very much prefer to play on an intercollegiate team because I love the idea of competing with other schools and traveling to many different places to play. I am very competitive in volleyball because I love it so much and am invested in it deeply. I want my team to do the best they can and even if I am not playing in a game I do not take it to heart; I still get extremely excited and competitive on the bench for my team. I have applied for FAFSA and many different scholarships. I am determined to attain as much financial aid as possible. My mom is the only one contributing to my college education, therefore I want to work hard to help offset the cost. I am open to playing for any division as long as it is competitive. I would love to make a college level team as a freshman even if I am not a starter or rarely get to play my first year. I know every player has to work hard to achieve a spot on the court and I am willing to take all the advice and coaching I can get to earn my spot.
