Personal Statement
I was born and raised in Cyprus, a small island-nation located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. I am currently attending high school at The English school of Nicosia, which is a private school following the seven-year British Educational System. Therefore, I will be graduating in June 2021. I am looking forward to beginning my studies in the USA in the fall of the same year at a highly accredited University.
Growing up I have always been intrigued by sports and from the age of 3 and for 7 years I was engaged in swimming, participating in many competitions across Cyprus. At the age of 11, I also started playing volleyball at Anorthosis Famagusta, one of the best volleyball clubs in Cyprus.
After a year of training in volleyball, I started playing as a starting line-up middle hitter for the U14 Anorthosis team. That was a successful season for my team resulting to the winning of the championship. Winning the gold medal in my first competing year and experiencing that unbelievable feeling, made me fall in love with the sport even more. At the age of 14 , I started training with the U16 team and played as a starting line-up player, an outside hitter for both the U14 and U16 teams. As a natural leader, it was an honour for me to be able to captain the U14 team to the first place and the U16 team to the second place in their respective championships. Being the captain of both teams helped me improve my leadership skills as well as make me more responsible and supportive towards all my teammates. Furthermore, participating in both championships made me more disciplined, as it helped improve my time management skills, and build up a strong character, as it required a lot of sacrifices in order to be able to balance efficiently both my athletic and academic life.
My determination to succeed, led me to the Women's team, in September 2017, at the age of 15. As the youngest player in the roster, I participated in several matches as an outside hitter for all U16, U18 and Women’s team. In Cyprus, teams competing in 1st Division are allowed to/can have up to 3 foreign players coming from all over the world. Competing with all the experienced and professional players of my team, helped me improve my performance while experiencing great moments during the season. This helped me mature both as a player as well as a person, while giving me also the chance to contribute to the team with my own personal experience.
Winning both the championship and Super Cup Gold metal, made me even more dedicated and hard working as I’ve realised that volleyball was my biggest passion and ever since my dream has been to become a skilful volleyball player.
During last season, 2018-2019, I participated in both U18 team as a starting line-up player and Women’s team as a backup player where we’ve won all the titles including first place in championship as well as the gold Medal in both the Super Cup and Cup in first Division. As a result of this great season, I was called to the National Women's team trials. Even though I managed to be included to the final 16 players,
as one of the youngest players of the team I was not able to take part in any tournaments since based on the regulations only 14 players are allowed.
In addition to my athletic interests and being an academically strong student, I am interested in Maths, Physics and Biology and I am driven towards engineering studies. Based on my dedication to this field of studies and on my desire to make the correct decision, last summer I worked as an operations Manager Trainee at a five-star hotel in my Country, thus gaining valuable experience in the field of engineering. Furthermore, wanting to get familiar with the technology used in Medicine, I observed a robotic prostate cancer medical operation at the American Medical Centre in my town.
