Personal Statement
Overview: I am in the graduating class of 2023 at Santa Cruz Cooperative School in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. As a middle (and opposite hitter) I play in my school's team and at CBA Volleyball. I am a starter on both teams. Regarding academics, I have been in the top three of my class since I was in 4th grade.
Background: I'd like to tell you a little bit about my background. I have played in my school's JV team in 2017 and 2018. In 2018 I was in eigth grade and was the only 8th grader asked to play for the varsity team. I have been in the Varsity team at my school since 2018 and still currently play in varsity. In 2019, at age 15, I joined my first club (Urubo-Olympic). I was asked to play in three teams including 'Menores' (age 15-16), 'Juveniles (age 17-18) and 'Mayores' (age 18+). In 2020 I transitioned to another club, CBA Volleyball, which I am in currently. I play in two teams, 'Juveniles' (age 17-18) and 'Mayores' (age 18+) teams. Where I live we only have regionals and nationals. I played in regionals in 2019 and 2020/2021 (but these two years have been cut short due to COVID). I was pre-selected for the regional team in two different age levels in 2020 but unfortunately COVID started. This year I have also been pre-selected once again. I was selected and attended the National tournament in October 2021 for ages 17-18 where I was faced with a challenge which consisted of me playing as an opposite (a position I hadn't played at a tournament before). My team and I got 2nd place for the National tournament.
Lessons Learned: Playing volleyball for 5 years has taught me the highs and lows of the game. It has taught me that I have to overcome adversity to succeed, as well as determination and to not give up. Volleyball has also taught me to not be discouraged and to always focus on getting better and always trying my best.
Strengths: I consider myself to be a determined and driven athlete. I am a team player and I'm always looking out for my teammates both inside and outside the court. I am encouraging towards others and very optimistic in every situation. I am highly motivated and self-disciplined which leads me to arrive hours before sessions begin and leave last. This also helps me to make the most out of every session I partake in. Even though I have a very competitive nature, I accept criticism and focus on perfecting every skill and correction given to me. I am responsible and confident in myself to handle challenges that arise.
Goals: A goal of mine has always been to play volleyball in college and at the highest level of competition ( Division I). I aspire to get a scholarship to play volleyball in college. This is something I’ve always wanted and which drives me as a player. As a versatile student-athlete, I believe my skills are sufficient to compete at that level. I strive to be an impact player, always looking at how to help my team win. I am a team player and have many qualities that I can offer your team including agility, intelligence, knowledge, determination, drive, intensity, sacrifice and hard work.
