Personal Statement
Since I was six my ambition has been to be a veterinarian and study Veterinary Medicine at university. I’ve always had an interest in animals, but I first realized I wanted to be a veterinarian when my dogs would get injured or sick and I would take care of them, and never let anyone else look after them. Realizing I wanted to be a veterinarian at such a young age had impacted everything I did and chose in future studies at school. I made sure to pick biology and chemistry when choosing classes as well as trying to volunteer at animal clinics and the local zoo for the experience. I noticed that in my classes I particularly excelled when it came to anything animal related because I was much more interested in that topic.
Volunteering at Bermuda’s local Zoo and Aquarium made me just as excited to become a veterinarian because I loved my job whether it was feeding the animals or cleaning up after them. I even applied to an overseas internship in the United Kingdom for future veterinarians and ended up flying there and participating in a lot of animal-related work and becoming more knowledgeable about the job. I got to witness all the good and bad parts of being a veterinarian, but nothing made me shy of still wanting to be one.
I believe that experience helped me understand my own personal qualities, determination, ambition, and perseverance. Once I realized what I wanted to be I did everything I was capable of to make my dream a reality, and even when I faced problems like hard subject topics or bad days, I overcame them. These qualities became incredibly useful in school, in sports and in daily tasks. My ambition became particularly useful in school because I would pick classes based on my goals not on whether they were easy or hard. I believe these qualities would be what help me get through university and make it easier to adjust to campus life.
My qualities have also helped me in my sports as a volleyball and basketball player for my school and as a volleyball player for Bermuda’s National team. I’ve persevered through injuries and balancing schoolwork and practice. I’ve shown my determination in the quality of my playing during games and practice. Exercising, team bonding, and responsibility are the main factors in my life as an athlete. These factors and my personal qualities have helped me in my life outside of sports and school, especially in making friends and acquiring jobs. They’ve also helped me with learning new skills like cooking and guitar.
Determination is my most favorable quality as it has helped me through school, sports and tough life situations. Experiencing hard situations in school when not doing well in a certain class, in sports when losing games or failing at a particular skill and in life when losing loved ones or having to work hard jobs, learning the ability to persevere and be determined enough to overcome the situation and do better has allowed me to go through life with an open mind and new appreciations for my blessings.
I believe all my qualities and the factors that have been involved in my life for a while, will continue to help me, more than ever in university. My love for animal science and volleyball will continuously be shown, definitely in the university I decide to go to. My hard work will pay off and I will stay eager to fulfil my dream of being a knowledgeable veterinarian. My determination, ambition, perseverance, and dreams will fuel me through any problem I face in school or in life.
