Personal Statement

Hello,

My name is Kaitlyn Merrill and I have been playing volleyball since seventh grade. The first time I stepped on the court, I had no idea what I was doing, but knew that I wanted to keep doing it. In seventh grade, I joined my middle school team and fell in love with the sport! I went on and played travel volleyball that year and I could truly feel myself improving and changing as a person and a player. Eighth grade came along and I made my middle school team again, but this time as captain, which I took very seriously! I became a hitter that year and once again fell head over heels in love with the sport! Freshman year of high school taught me that life gets much more complicated as we get older and I have to learn how to balance school and volleyball together. The way I see it is, in order to improve on the court, I need to excel in the classroom, and thus, I make sure school work comes first, as my education is extremely important to me.

Before volleyball I was a very shy and closed off kid and my grades weren’t the best.  Once I stepped onto the court and felt a volleyball for the first time, everything changed! I opened up, was more outgoing and made new friends. I got my act together in school, as I believe that the skills I learned to be a great student transfers over to the court and helps you become an amazing athlete, for you are more driven to improve yourself, as I am. I would love to continue my career as a scholar athlete into college. After college, I would love to continue with volleyball and be a coach, so others can learn about the sport that I fell in love with and I hope they will too. I owe everything to my outstandingly supportive family, teachers, coaches and teammates, for without them, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I thank the Lord everyday for the opportunity to play the sport that I love.

Thank you for viewing my profile,
Kaitlyn Merrill
