My name is Alaja Worsham and I am a 5’5, 11th grade opposite/right side hitter. As a little girl, I enjoyed dance, gymnastics and tumbling. However, at the age of 9, I decided to give volleyball a try. It has become one of my favorite things to do. I enjoy watching volleyball in my spare time, but I find real joy in being on the court. It is my dream to continue playing volleyball at the collegiate level in the future.
I started out playing recreational volleyball with my mom as the coach. Having a parent as a coach had its pros and cons, but I would not be the player I am today without that experience. She had a big impact on the passion I have for the sport today. I’ve played club volleyball for 3 years. I’ve learned how to be resilient in volleyball after having my first team fold as a club. This made me set my mind with higher standards and goals for the next season’s tryouts. However, after not making the team I desired, I realized I can be the best me on any team if I put forth the effort. I got even better at accomplishing my personal goals that year.
I know in order to get to the collegiate level that I will have to continue to put in the work. Volleyball is a sport that involves the skills of always being alert and mentally prepared for anything. In school and on the court, I carry this skill. I have always been a competitive player in family games and I bring that mindset to the court as well. I strive hard in class during our academic team challenges, especially when it is the girls against the boys. In volleyball practice, I make an effort to be the first to finish in our running drills and try to be the last one standing in our knock out games. I find this skill helps me build confidence in myself, as well as a way to push my teammates.
I am very excited about starting my high school career and hope to see a great deal of improvement academically and athletically over the next 2 years as I prepare for my college journey.
