On paper, athletes are defined by their stats that they earn throughout the course of a season. Sometimes, those stats are a true reflection of exactly what that athlete may bring to your program. However, I am not one of those athletes.
My stats, while good and competitive when compared to my peers, are not the “end-all, be-all” to Mercedez Lane. Many, okay most, will describe me as shy and quiet in the halls of my school, within the classroom walls, and among the athletes in the locker room. However, do not let the quiet and shy description paint a picture of a meek and mild young woman. I am fiercely competitive, one of the hardest working athletes, and one of the strongest among my high school peers. I am a five sport varsity athlete that chooses not to engage in badgering the opponent, yelling at others, or talking negatively about athletes and coaches. I’ve seen it done too many times and nothing positive comes from such behavior. Most of the time that type of behavior becomes an obstacle that coaches and players can’t seem to overcome.
I choose to stand on my own, quietly, respectfully, and competitively. I will never be the tallest on the team, the loudest on the team, or the most vocal in the locker room, but I can guarantee you I will be one of the hardest working and most competitive athletes you will coach. I am never and will never be a problem on or off the court or field. But please, do not mistake me for meek and mild.
I look forward to attending college as an athlete and pursuing a business degree… quietly, aggressively, and competitively, of course. The only way Mercedez Lane knows to be.
