I am Josephine, a sophomore at Heritage high school and planning on doing running start at Clark college, living in Vancouver, Washington. I have been playing volleyball for 4 years and am currently in my first year of club volleyball. When I was 13, I was practicing before a game when I realized that playing volleyball was something I wanted to do beyond high school. Ever since then I have worked hard to push myself to become a better player mentally and physically. I play volleyball because it gives me an escape from everything, allowing me to focus on one thing the game. I love competing against other teams it gives me a rush of adrenaline and joy as I know that my team has worked hard to win the rally and even if we didn't win the rally we gave it our all. When I first started volleyball I wasn't really sure if the game was for me, the game was very hard and competitive, and well lets just say I wasn't the most in shape kid. Over time though through hard work and determination I have learned to exceed my limits I have put on myself and to be competitive, through all this I have only bettered myself to where I am today.
As a freshman I was invited by the head coach at my school to go to a volleyball camp for Junior Varsity players. I was extremely excited to go, well there I learned a lot and use the techniques they taught us to this day. When it came time to try out that year I sadly didn't make Junior varsity but I made Junior Junior Varsity or C team. Being on this team really helped me have a better mindset on and off the court, along with having a better mindset I was able to better myself physically by improving my jumps and my approach greatly. This year I tried out for club volleyball amid the pandemic, this meant that I had to have a one on one tryout with a coach. Not even 5 minutes after I had tried out I got a text asking me to join their top team. I wasn't planning on being on the travel team as it was very expensive, but when the given the opportunity my parents and I decided that it was a great opportunity and that I should take. Over the short amount of time I have been on this team my skills have greatly improved I have noticed that my footwork and speed have improved along with my knowledge of the game and where my position is on the court during all times. As an athlete, I have a lot of positive energy going into the game and sport. I have a no quit mindset on and off the court, if something is hard or I can't get my foot work down I will continue to practice on that over and over again util I get it perfect. I have an ability to motivate my teammates no matter what the situation, while being able to stay focused on and off the court and excel in my academics.
My ideal school would be one that fits my academic and athletic dreams. Athletically I'm looking for a program that helps to solidify my work ethic, helps me reach my athletic goals, along with good team values. This program would help me push myself to the max, building off of my existing skills. Academically I'm looking for a program that would support my dreams of becoming a vet technician, majoring in Biology. I know that my future college team may not be my first choice but I am willing to make adaptations.
I don't think that 2020 went planned for anyone, but I made the best of it. During the pandemic, I have stayed active and engaged in volleyball by joining a club team, going to school open gyms, and working on my athleticism at my house. I have done so by doing at least 100 sets in a row on the garage along with 200 bumps in a row against a wall, I then would set and bump 10 times each into a basketball hoop of medium height. I have done this about everyday for about a year now. I have also purchased a serve trainer that helps me improve my serves and spikes. Along with all of this I have stayed active by riding bikes and doing whatever I can with friends and family while staying safe.
