"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." - Helen Keller
Being a swimmer, even on a team, can be lonely. That's why the summer before my freshman year, I switched sports from swimming to water polo. I have been a competitive swimmer since I was 6 years old and played basketball, softball, and volleyball all through junior high. Playing water polo has allowed me to combine all those team skills with my swimming expertise... and helped me feel like I can do so much with my teammates.
My name is Georgia Moran and I am a senior at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, CA. I am 5'6", 160 pounds, and right-handed. I knew nothing about water polo until that summer of freshman year. I had a great coach and awesome mentor, who spent the summer teaching me everything they knew about the sport. Thanks to them, I not only earned a spot on the varsity team as a freshman, but I also became a starter early in our season. As my coach says, I am a natural. As an attacker and setter, I am one of the top scorers on both my high school team and club team, Harvard-Westlake's LA Premier Club 18U. I received Most Valuable Offensive Player for my NDHS Water Polo Team as a sophomore and junior and Best Sprinter for the NDHS Swim Team as freshman, sophomore, and junior year. I was voted to 1st Team All-Conference and received Mission League All Academic Awards freshman, sophomore and junior years. I am an aggressive player, a team leader, but also a team player.
I am a dedicated student-athlete. In that order. Academics are a priority for me. I attack my studies like I play water polo - aggressively. I am looking for a college that will support my aspirations as a student and challenge me as an athlete. I am coachable. I take criticism well. I am a social person. I love the bonds made between teammates and coaches. I look forward to being a part of an NCAA team.
Why did I choose that opening quote from Helen Keller? She was a rock star who fought through blindness and deafness to communicate with the world. Because my mother works for a non-profit that creates inclusive playgrounds so that children with disabilities can be socially included through play, I have been involved with the disabled community since I was born. Volunteering for Shane's Inspiration since I was 7 years old has inspired and motivated me to create inclusion wherever I go. Being a part of an elite water polo team is not about going it alone. It's about playing together as a team. Because as a team, you can do so much. I hope you will consider me to be a part of your team.
