Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Jamal Lewis. I am a multi-sport athlete at York Suburban High School in central Pennsylvania. I wrestle as well as play football and baseball. Over the past two years I have lettered in football and also led my team in tackles during the 2019 undefeated season. During this same season I received the All-Academic Bronze Team Award. In addition to these accomplishments, I lettered in wrestling as a freshman, went 23 and 10, and ended the season by taking 6th at the District III sectionals.
While I have enjoyed success early on, in my wrestling career. I have also had to face challenges along the way that have taught me about who I am as an athlete and as a person. During football season I broke my hand and chose to play in a cast. Later during wrestling season, I had both knees scoped, still earning a 9 and 1 record. While these injuries cut my season short, I learned how to adapt to be the best that I could under any situation. I became a role model and mentor to some of my teammates who were less experienced. Additionally, while I was unable to wrestle, I stayed involved any way possible, helping manage the team, coach teammates and middle schoolers while supporting the team at every match and tournament. Overall, my experiences helped form the person I am today. With all the challenges, I have learned to be dedicated to what I want, appreciate what I have, and to persevere through any circumstance to reach my goals. While COVID-19 altered my plans for the spring and summer I have maintained a strong work ethic. During this break from sports and tournaments, I have used the time to better myself through a weekly schedule of lifting, conditioning and drilling. I not only took time to heal from the surgeries but I also worked on developing my strengths so that I am prepared for the next opportunity, whether it is football or wrestling.
I have been wrestling for 10 years and the sport has brought out the best in me. Competing on the college level will give me the opportunity to do the thing I love and earn a degree. I am looking forward to proving myself over the next two years of highschool and finding a program where I can continue to compete and be a part of a wrestling family that shares a similar drive and passion.
