Personal Statement

I have worn the number 2 or some variation on my hockey jersey going all the way back to my days on Mites.  I chose this number as a 5 year old out of respect and admiration for Derek Jeter, who has represented to me the gold standard of a professional athlete both on and off the field.

The most significant values that I learned from Derek Jeter’s career and applied in my own life are those of team work, the importance of being a good team player, and how to lead by example.  The success of a team is dependent upon the players going all out for themselves, their coaches, and each other every time they step on the ice.  This is the way I have always played the game, and I hope that I have set an example for my teammates along the way.

Over time, the number 2 has taken on an even more personal meaning to me.  It represents my continuous striving to improve myself both on the ice and in the classroom.  I know that there is always room for improvement in my studies and in my skills.  An A on an exam or a win on the scoreboard never means a day off.  The thrill of the success is very rewarding, but it is only momentary.  I’ll be following up by hitting my books or heading off to the conditioning room to ride the bike.  Hard work drives me, and I will be striving for successful outcomes over the rest of my life, long after my school and playing days are behind me.
