Personal Statement

I hate to lose! I am ultra-competitive and constantly strive to improve, whether I’m swimming, mastering academic subjects, or hiking in the mountains. My goal is to be the best that I can be and I apply myself accordingly. I am independent, work hard and diligently train every day. I’m passionate about swimming, but I’m also creative and committed to improving people’s lives so I also find time to do community volunteer work.

I am extremely interested in both STEM and the humanities. Accordingly, I have won honors in both fields at State, Regional, and National levels.

My long-term aspiration is to have a career as a forensic psychologist or in an allied medical position such as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. While these careers may initially seem contradictory, they aren’t. Both fields offer me the opportunity to help people and improve lives. Because I am a compassionate and innovative problem-solver, but for many years I was also attracted to a career in chemical engineering. I am a realist who understands no matter which path I take, it requires hard work and inordinate study; success won’t come easily. I believe anything worthwhile is worth working for and I don’t expect instantaneous gratification. I am looking forward to attending a university where I can study in the field of my choice while also swimming on the women’s collegiate team.

In terms of my athletic abilities, I’m versatile. While I prefer freestyle and butterfly, I also enjoy the other strokes. I have started sharing my passion for swimming with younger children because l want to introduce others to the joy of being in the water. Since I started, I’ve focused on becoming a team player and honing my form and technique. I listen to my coaches and take constructive criticism well.

I really can't say what makes me "different" from a dedicated athlete scholar, but I know I possess the skills and attributes to contribute to the success of a top-notch university. Please know that I am seeking a balanced student-athlete experience, a committed and tight-knit team, speed-based training, and a college community where creativity and caring is encouraged.
