Personal Statement
~~It was a play I've done thousands of times before. I sprinted to the outside corners of the field, getting ready to shoot the beautiful pass the midfield sent my way, intending for the perfect goal I've done so many times before. This time when my left foot planted into the ground, my right foot left the ground ready to transfer all my energy to the ball, causing my left leg to carry all of my weight. First I heard a pop!... then felt the pop! I could not move and was carried off the field. In the emergency room, I was confronted with the bad news that I tore my ACL and needed surgery.
Recovering from tearing my ACL was very hard, but I am a person who will look at the best in every situation. Even though my left leg was incapable of getting stronger during the healing period, I pushed myself to strengthen my arms, core, and right leg in an attempt to stay physical fit and to improve other areas that could potentially benefit my athletic performance. This not only proves that I am strong and that I always try to improve as an athlete, but also shows that I have the motivation to push myself to be the best that I can be. I accepted this devastating setback but did not give up on my dream to be playing volleyball in college. I am dedicated to my dream to play for a college team and want to further my education.
On the court, I always display a good attitude and help my teammates do the same. I view losing as part of playing sports and use this experience to analyze area of improvements. I listen to coaches’ feedback and respect other players and referees’ decisions. Balancing the rigorous International Baccalaureate program and athletics, proves that I have time management skills, the ability to face and master challenges, and academic dedication. I know that my potential for academic success and athletic ability will exceed the standards set by colleges! My successful participation in athletic team programs prepared me to be a great team player that contributes by athletic talent and positive character traits. The academic standards set by the IB program will enable me to meet and succeed academic expectations.
