Growing up, I wasn’t preparing to go to college or thinking about college. There were various obstacles I had to face growing up, one main issue that occurred was when my parents got separated. While still attending school, this event in my life made my days feel very long, it made me build this relationship with mi abuela (Grandmother) as her playing the mother role which made me a stronger person. She would always be there when I thought no one was there for me and would always tell me, “Échale ganas mijo!” (strive for greatness son) those are the words I go by everyday when I’m having a rough day or just need a slight bit of motivation.
Although I had support from mi abuela (grandmother), I had trouble understanding some of my homework and I didn’t have much help in order for me to fully understand it. My dad wasn’t home most of the time because of work in order to financially support us, but wouldn’t support me as much academic wise, his effort matters the most. This made me more of an independent individual spending most of my day alone doing my homework and studying. I learned to always try my best no matter if I had support or not, because at the end of the day they’re the ones who will miss out. I didn’t have many opportunities growing up, so I took every opportunity given to me so I can make the best of life with what I was provided with.
My first day as a highschooler was eye opening, always thinking to myself “I’m really doing this, not only for me but for my family” my goal coming into senior year was to make my family proud of my hard work. I made it further than most of my family members ever did in school and they’re very proud of that. One step closer to completing my number one goal that has always been on my mind, college. Coming from a household where my family worked in labor for long hours for little pay, I set a goal to break that cycle.I am dedicated to getting a degree and supporting my family so they can live in leisure and retire from hard work.
Enrolling into college will open up new doors for me, I will get the opportunity to network, build a better social life along with learning and pursuing in something I care about. Having set this goal for myself, I am ready to tackle any other obstacles that will come my way. My high school career I was capable of keeping my grades up, along with partaking in many curricular activities such as baseball, Concept Young Scholars Program and participating in community service. These are just some examples of how I was capable of maintaining myself and my school work with no parent supervision. I am a responsible young individual and I care about my future that is shown through my academics. I hope any college is willing to accept me and realize that I am more than prepared for this path.
