Baseball is a significant part of my life. I have been playing the game of baseball since I could walk. Hitting, pitching, and fielding whenever and wherever I can. Growing up without a father for the first 12 years of my life was a struggle. I didn't have a Dad to play catch with or hit with. All I had was myself, a ball, a bat, and a glove. My mother helped in all the ways she could, but being a single mom working a full-time job, I was on my own regarding sports. I remember staying up hours on end playing wall ball on a wall in my bedroom until my mom had to come to make me go to sleep.
Without baseball, I don't know where I would be. It has taught me so many things. I've been taught how to be part of a team and how to become a winner. Two things I've learned from baseball stand out to me. First of all, Leadership. Second, how to deal with Mental adversity.
Baseball is a mental game, and if you don't have the best mindset possible to succeed, you will fail. There's no backboard to help you in baseball, no timeouts to stop the clock, and no penalties to give your team an advantage. It's just you and your team. Having to be ready for every pitch, groundball, and flyball that comes your way. Your team has a disadvantage if you're not mentally locked in 24/7. Baseball has given me the best mindset I could ever ask for, locked in all day, every day, to win.
Leadership is the most vital aspect of any baseball team. If you don't have a leader, you will not win games. I've become a leader throughout my baseball career as I feel I can be. My teammates respect me, and I like to lead by example. For instance, if there is a bad call, you should not show up the umpire; you take it and move on. If you pop out in a situation you shouldn't have popped out in, then you get right back on the fence and cheer on your team.
I play Travel Baseball for Team Elite located in Atlanta,GA, and also play Varsity High School Baseball at Southside Christian School. I also have played basketball for the majority of my life. I look forward to finding a school that will allow me to have a well-rounded college experience consisting of a great education and to follow my lifelong dream of playing baseball at the college level.
