Personal Statement
I have always enjoyed sports. In middle school, I played six team sports and ran track & cross country. But, at some point field hockey emerged as my favorite and my passion. I particularly remember one Sunday when I was playing in a 7 v. 7 league. I had managed to get on two teams, so I was playing two games every Sunday (luckily the teams were in different pools and did not play each other). One week, after I finished my second game, another coach approached me and asked if I would play goalie for his team, as their goalie was absent that day. So, I pulled on all the goalie gear and played another game. After that game another coach approached me and asked if I would play for his team as they were short-handed. He gave me a jersey and sleeves and I played a fourth game. Afterwards, I wasn’t tired or burnt out at all. I could have gone all day. That was a big signal to me that field hockey is my game.
My experience in field hockey has been very rewarding and fulfilling. As a result of playing for my high school and club teams, along with Futures and Junior Olympics, I have been able to travel and play all around the country and to meet and play with and against a wide variety of players from different places and different backgrounds from my own. I hope to continue to enjoy this aspect of athletics by playing at the college level.
I have been drawn to team sports by the camaraderie and team-building that they bring, compared to individual sports. I still play lacrosse in the Spring, along with my more-or-less year-round field hockey. I believe these experiences will serve me well later in life, in jobs, friendships and other relationships. I don’t know for sure what I want to do in life, but I am considering coaching because I would get to keep on enjoying those aspects of team sports that I find so satisfying.
