Personal Statement

June 20, 2016

Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to review my profile and especially those that have given me consideration as a recruit for your program.  The process of recruiting has been stressful at times, but, overall, has been an exciting parts of my high school athletic experience.

I am pleased to announce, however, that I have decided to pursue my athletic career in the sport of Rugby.  I am now committed to play for the 2016 D1A Rugby National Champions, Life University, in Marietta, GA.  I am very excited to pursue a degree in Exercise Science and ultimately Chiropractic and I will be doing this while playing for one of the top programs in the country.

Thanks again for your time and communication and best of luck in your upcoming seasons.

Regards,

Mike Wilson

UPDATE ALERT!  UPDATE ALERT!!

Michael Wilson has transferred to Providence Senior High for his Senior Year.

I wish the best to my previous teammates but have transferred due to reasons other than football.  I do plan to have a great senior year at Providence and am excited to be a part of another great football tradition.  My goal has always been and still is to play at the next level and I am confident that my new coaches can help prepare me to make that happen.

Thanks for considering me as a potential recruit.  I suppose the fact that you are reading this means you saw something that made you say, “This kid might be worth giving another look…”

I would be lying if I didn’t admit that I am proud of the on-field achievements, but I want you to know that I recognize the reality that football is a short-lived part of my life - one that I really love and want to extend as long as possible, but one that I don’t count on to make me a success in life.

Success in my life will be measured by how I deal with adversity, how I treat those around me, and, most importantly, how many people I help along the way.  I learned early on that I have a gift for caring.  It is, and always has been, important to me that when I see someone in need of support, I make the effort to do what I can to help.  Whether it is a physically challenged classmate, a kid having difficulty fitting in socially, or a teammate clueless in the weight room, I want to help.

“That’s great, Mike, but how does that make my team better?”  Great question.

Well, this type of attitude toward others clearly is an asset for a great teammate.  Teams win championships, not individuals…at least not in football.  And your team better be made of a group of individuals that understand this.  You better have a group of men that will stick up for each other (on the field and off) through thick and thin if you intend to compete for a championship.

I can tell you, without question, that I understand that.  So much so, that I feel as though I am hardwired for team sports.  And, while I may not be hardwired for football, it does seem that the hard work and dedication has been working to “program” my mind and body for football.  And that’s why I feel I can make a difference on your team.

So, coach, give me a chance to keep the dream alive…Give me a chance to play another 4 years.  If you do, I can guarantee you will gain not only someone with the skills and fortitude to be a great player and make a difference for the football program.  But, you will also gain someone that will make a difference in the lives of those around him…in the locker room, in the classroom, and around the campus.

What about academics?  I am planning to pursue a degree in finance at a university with a recognized business school.  The size and location are flexible, but I do prefer mid-size schools with access to a good size city.  My career objective is to become a leader in the area of financial planning and/or investment banking.  I believe that my compassion for others and my interest in business accounting can be powerful tools for success in this field.

What kind of football program interests me?  My goal is to get a scholarship to play football.  I am eager to be a part of any program with a winning attitude.  Maybe that means they are winning now or maybe that means they are taking the right steps to win in the next few years.  Both types of programs provide opportunities that challenge the player and situations that allow for personal growth.

Where should the school be located?  It would be great to play somewhere that my parents and friends could visit and see me play, but if the school is right, I will travel.  That being said, I would welcome the opportunity to stay in North Carolina, I also love Virginia and South Carolina.  I was born and raised in Indiana and have lots of friends and family in the Midwest.  So schools in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio are also appealing.  Since finance is my career objective, anywhere in proximity to New York City is also possible.

So, thank you again for your consideration and I sure hope we get a chance to meet soon.  I realize you have several options for quality recruits, but ask that you don’t overlook the "kid from Charlotte" who doesn’t only shine on the field, but will be sure to shine in the community; wherever he goes.
