My name is Trent Thomasson; I’m a country boy from Goodview Virginia. I started playing football at the age of 5 and have played every year since. I played for a small rec team where we never won a single game until my first year of middle school football. Even though we never won a single game I always strived to finish each practice and game no matter what the season’s outcome may have been. I watched several friends quit and give up on our team, that’s when I decided that I wasn’t going to be like everyone else. I decided that I was going to become a leader on our team and strive and dedicate myself to work the hardest on and off the field.
When I moved up to middle school football our first year wasn’t so good but I continued to work hard and it finally payed off when I was moved up to JV football team at the end of our season. I started to work even harder no matter what it took and I earned a spot on our JV’s offensive line.
The biggest influence in how I viewed football came when last year our football season come to an end one game short. Last year our team for the first time in our school history made it through the regular season at 9-1. Through playoffs we continued to beat hard teams we never faced winning all our playoff games. Next was the 3A State Championship game where we faced a team that we had beaten two years in a row before so we didn’t take them seriously as we should have. We lost the State Championship game…all our hard work, sweat and blood that we put in the off season was lost.
I realized that even though we lost the biggest game our team will probably ever play that I played the hardest I could and left it all on the field. From that game on I realized no matter how hard you work it doesn’t always mean you will succeed. I learned you always need to work your hardest even when no one’s watching, the only harm it can do is better your opportunities and goals later on in life.
